The opening evening of the exhibition “The Mystery of Matter” at Skowronscy Art Gallery brought together a wide circle of art enthusiasts: collectors, critics, artists, and many friends of the gallery. In an atmosphere of contemplation, visitors paused before the sculptures of Jerzy Fober, one of Poland’s most distinguished contemporary artists. Encountering his works offered entry into a world where the materiality of wood becomes a point of departure for questions about spirituality, transcendence, and the human condition.
The exhibition was conceived as a coherent narrative, guiding the viewer from images of fall, suffering, and death toward renewal and the triumph of life. Beginning with the monumental “Fallen Angel,” moving through sculptures alluding to the Mystery of the Passion, and culminating in works symbolizing resurrection, the whole unfolds as a story open to inquiry and reflection.
Fober does not provide ready-made answers; instead, he proposes contemplation and attentiveness, inviting each visitor to discover their own intuitions and experiences.
The artist’s sculptures emerge from the physicality of wood, yet their meaning reaches far beyond matter. These works engage in dialogue with Christian iconography and tradition, while remaining profoundly relevant today, as they draw attention to ultimate questions that never lose their urgency in a changing world.
The exhibition opening also became an opportunity for encounters and conversations within the art community. An added value of the evening was the presence of the audience itself, for it is the viewer’s gaze that lends the sculptures their fullness of meaning and life beyond the artist’s studio.
The “Mystery of Matter” exhibition aligns with the mission of Skowronscy Art Gallery: the search for true beauty and the creation of a space for contemplation. Its message points toward what is at once deepest and simplest—the experience of art not merely as form, but as a bridge between the visible world and that which lies beyond words.
In this way, Skowronscy Art Gallery opens a new chapter in its activity, presenting an event that leaves no one indifferent.
