The opening night of the exhibition “Burning Saddles” at Skowronsky Art Gallery was a special occasion – a gathering where the dignity of the painting tradition intertwined with the vitality of the contemporary world. The space, filled to capacity, brought together distinguished collectors, critics, artists and numerous friends, who joined us in attempting to decipher the painterly puzzle presented by brothers Wincenty and Stanisław Czwartos.

The exhibition became a forum for a fascinating dialogue. In an atmosphere of concentration yet lively discussion, our guests were able to grapple with the question of the relevance of classical forms in today’s reality. For ‘Burning Saddles’ is not merely a display of technical mastery, but above all an erudite narrative about a world that seems to be shaking to its foundations.

The central focus of the evening was a reflection on two distinct artistic strategies. On the one hand, we admired Wincenty Czwartos’s monumental equestrian portraits, in which the ‘blue of death’—evoking Andrzej Wróblewski—coexisted with ironic references to the old masters and Malevich’s Suprematism. On the other, we grappled with the dense symbolism of Stanisław Czwartos, whose figures of the bull and decapitated riders became a bitter yet remarkably apt commentary on contemporary crises and the twilight of civilisation.

Contemplating these large-format canvases together has allowed us to see that beneath the historical costume lies a profound sensitivity to the human condition. This painting, though full of intelligent irony, does not shy away from the gravity of ultimate questions.

This exhibition marks another step in the fulfilment of the mission of Skowronscy Art – a family-run gallery established by collectors who have been actively involved in the art market for many years. Each of our initiatives is part of a consistently developed vision, based on quality, authenticity and a long-term, responsible approach to art and its place in the contemporary world.
