Wojciech Cieśniewski
Wojciech Cieśniewski, born in 1958 in Działdowo, is a Polish painter, professor of fine arts and educator associated with the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. He belongs to a group of artists who treat painting not only as a visual medium, but also as a tool of cognition, memory and moral reflection.
In 1984, he received a master’s degree in mathematics and later studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. He graduated with distinction in 1988 from the studio of Professor Rajmund Ziemski. Since 1990, he has been professionally associated with the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, where he teaches painting and educates successive generations of artists.
Artistic practice
Wojciech Cieśniewski’s work has undergone a significant evolution: from gestural, expressive painting close to abstraction towards mature narrative painting focused on memory, history, ethics and the human condition.
The artist addresses questions of the responsibility of the image, individual and collective memory, the experience of loss and the moral dimension of looking. In his work, painting becomes a way of restoring visibility to what has been repressed, forgotten or threatened with disappearance.
Painting of memory
Wojciech Cieśniewski is often associated with an ethics of memory. In his paintings, he frequently uses archival photographs, portraits of anonymous people, images of inhabitants of former towns, traces of history and visual references connected with the traumas of the twentieth century.
Through painterly reinterpretation of photographic material, the artist does not reconstruct history in a documentary way, but creates a space of contemplation. Blurred contours, figures emerging from darkness, the materiality of paint and the tension between visibility and disappearance form the distinctive character of his painting.
Figuration, narrative and humanism
In Cieśniewski’s mature work, the human figure becomes a carrier of memory, dignity and a question about the viewer’s responsibility. The artist does not treat the figure merely as a painterly motif, but as a testimony to the existence of a particular human being.

Teaching and academic activity
Wojciech Cieśniewski has been associated with the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw for many years. He served as vice-dean of the Faculty of Painting from 2005 to 2012 and has led a diploma painting studio since 2010.
As an educator, he combines painterly practice with theoretical reflection on the image, tradition, artistic responsibility and the relationship between art and social awareness. His teaching remains an important part of his broader artistic practice.
Awards and significance
Wojciech Cieśniewski received the Grand Prix in the “Painting of the Year 2003” competition organised by the magazine “Art & Business”. His work has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Poland and abroad.
The importance of his painting lies in its consistent combination of craft, intellectual discipline and the ethical dimension of the image. Cieśniewski demonstrates that contemporary painting can be a space of memory, testimony and deep reflection on the human being.
