Stefan Gierowski – painter, draughtsman and a classic of Polish modern art

Stefan Gierowski (1925–2022) was a Polish painter and draughtsman, widely recognised as a classic of Polish modern art. His oeuvre, evolving from informel towards a more geometrically structured image, played a crucial role in defining the concept of “autonomous abstraction” in Polish contemporary art. In his paintings, colour and light became the primary means of building space and spiritual tension.

Biography and education – Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków and Jagiellonian University

Stefan Gierowski studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, in the studios of Professors Zbigniew Pronaszko and Karol Frycz. At the same time, he studied art history at the Jagiellonian University, which deepened his understanding of artistic tradition and helped him situate his own work within the broader context of European art.

From 1949, he was based in Warsaw, which became the main stage for his artistic and academic activity. It was there that he established his position as one of the most important figures of post-war Polish abstraction.

Teacher and authority – Gierowski at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw

Between 1962 and 1996, Stefan Gierowski taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. He served as a professor, later as Dean of the Faculty of Painting, and was elected Rector-elect.

Considered an outstanding educator, he had a profound influence on subsequent generations of artists. He was a mentor, among others, to members of the renowned formation Gruppa, whom he encouraged to seek their own visual language, emphasising formal courage, intellectual independence and responsibility for the image.

In 1986, he was awarded the title of full professor, confirming his significance both as an artist and as an academic authority.

From informel to “autonomous abstraction”

The painting of Stefan Gierowski underwent a clear evolution – from informel and expressive matter painting towards abstraction based on a clear, often geometric structure. Over time, he moved away from figuration and literary subject matter, focusing on the painting as an autonomous reality.

In this context, he defined the notion of “autonomous abstraction”, understood as painting that does not illustrate or narrate, but exists in and of itself as a set of colours, lights, tensions and spatial relations. The picture becomes a field of energy generated by the interplay of hue, luminosity and rhythm.

Colour, light and Roman numerals instead of titles

One of Gierowski’s most distinctive decisions was to abandon literary titles in favour of Roman numerals. His works are identified by numbers (for example, Painting CXXX), which:

  • detach them from direct verbal associations,
  • direct the viewer’s attention solely to the visual language,
  • reinforce the autonomy of the painting as a self-sufficient entity.

Within this framework, colour and light become the main tools for constructing space, dynamism and spiritual tension. Gierowski’s paintings often:

  • create spatial illusion through colour relations alone,
  • rely on subtle tonal transitions,
  • invite a contemplative, concentrated way of looking.

In this way, Stefan Gierowski’s art can be seen as a long-term exploration of the nature of light and the potential of abstract painting.

Stefan Gierowski and the independent culture movement

During the 1980s, Stefan Gierowski was actively associated with the independent culture movement in Poland. He supported initiatives that operated outside official structures and valued artistic autonomy and freedom of expression.

This combination of rigorous abstract practice and ethical engagement further strengthens his position as one of the key personalities of post-war Polish art.

Awards, distinctions and historical significance

Among the distinctions he received, a central place is held by the prestigious Jan Cybis Award (1980), one of the most important Polish prizes for painting. This award acknowledged not only his artistic achievements but also his influence on the direction of Polish abstraction.

His works are present in major museums and contemporary art collections, and his name appears in virtually all significant studies devoted to Polish post-war abstraction, modernism and the history of the Warsaw and Kraków art scenes.

Today, Stefan Gierowski is regarded as one of the central figures who shaped the face of post-war Polish painting. His concept of “autonomous abstraction”, rooted in light, colour and compositional discipline, has become a key point of reference for many contemporary artists.
