Contemporary Art Gallery – Skowronscy Art – Works by the artist and painter Ryszard Woźniak

Ryszard Woźniak

Ryszard Woźniak, born on 13 June 1956 in Białystok, is a Polish painter, performer, art theorist, writer and educator. He is one of the key figures of the Polish art scene of the 1980s and a co-founder of the legendary artistic formation Gruppa.

From 1976 to 1981, he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in the studio of Professor Stefan Gierowski. He received his diploma in 1981. From the early 1980s, his work became strongly associated with the energy of the New Expression, the critical language of painting and the experience of artistic and social transformation.

Artistic practice

Ryszard Woźniak’s painting combines expressive form with intellectual discipline, irony, metaphor and political-social commentary. The artist addresses existential themes, examining the condition of the individual, the artist and the community in relation to history, symbolic violence, language, ideology and the present.

His paintings often use intense signs, contrast, deformation, symbolic condensation and tension between figuration and gesture. In Woźniak’s work, painting is not only a medium of image-making, but also a way of thinking, a field of resistance, commentary and reflection on reality.

Gruppa and the New Expression

From 1982, Ryszard Woźniak was associated with Gruppa, one of the most important artistic formations in Polish art of the 1980s. He co-founded the group together with Ryszard Grzyb, Paweł Kowalewski, Jarosław Modzelewski, Włodzimierz Pawlak and Marek Sobczyk.

The artists of Gruppa rejected academic neutrality and the official language of art, creating painting that was forceful, ironic, political and existential. Woźniak participated in numerous exhibitions and actions of the group and co-edited its magazine Oj dobrze już, an important testimony to the independent artistic culture of the period.

Beyond painting

In addition to painting, Ryszard Woźniak creates installations, objects, performances and polychromes. His artistic practice includes both the traditional medium of painting and activities that cross the boundaries between image, text, space and gesture.

An important aspect of his work is the reflection on art as a tool of resistance, admiration, criticism and spiritual experience. Woźniak consistently treats art as an area of intense thinking about the world, not merely as an aesthetic object.

Teaching

Ryszard Woźniak is associated with the University of Zielona Góra, where he has led a diploma painting studio since 1992. As a professor and educator, he has shaped successive generations of artists, combining the experience of a painter, theorist and participant in major transformations of contemporary Polish art.

Selected events and collections

Ryszard Woźniak has participated in important exhibitions of Polish and international contemporary art, including Documenta 8 in Kassel in 1987. His works are held in major public collections in Poland, including the National Museums in Warsaw, Kraków, Wrocław and Poznań, as well as in the collection of Zachęta — National Gallery of Art.

Significance

Ryszard Woźniak remains one of the most important artists of the New Expression generation. His work is a powerful synthesis of painterly energy, philosophical reflection, irony and critical thought on history and the contemporary condition.
