Maria Stangret-Kantor – painter, actress and a key figure of the Polish neo-avant-garde
Maria Stangret-Kantor (1929–2020) was a Polish painter, actress and writer, and one of the leading figures of the Polish avant-garde and neo-avant-garde. Her practice, ranging from gestural painting in the spirit of informel through conceptual objects and assemblages to mature, lyrical “Hommages” cycles, has secured her a permanent place in the canon of Polish contemporary art. Closely associated with the Kraków Group and with Tadeusz Kantor’s Cricot 2 Theatre, she played a crucial role in shaping the image of the Polish neo-avant-garde.
Biography and artistic education of Maria Stangret-Kantor
Between 1955 and 1958, Maria Stangret-Kantor studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, in the studios of Professors Jan Świderski and Emil Krcha. Early on, she became connected with the Kraków avant-garde milieu.
From 1956, she was a member of the Kraków Group, one of the most important artistic formations in Poland, bringing together artists engaged with modern art, experimentation and the expansion of painterly practice. This context strongly influenced her artistic attitude, based on openness, freedom and the search for an individual visual language.
Cricot 2 Theatre – collaboration with Tadeusz Kantor
From 1957, Maria Stangret-Kantor worked as an actress and close collaborator of Tadeusz Kantor in the legendary Cricot 2 Theatre. She took part in all of Kantor’s major performances and happenings, co-creating the visual and emotional language of his theatre.
Her involvement with Cricot 2 meant not only acting on stage, but also participating in Kantor’s radical explorations related to theatre of death, memory, the object and the actor’s body. These experiences deeply informed her painting, especially her approach to space, gesture and the status of the object.
From gestural painting to conceptual objects
In her early work, Maria Stangret-Kantor was associated with gestural painting and informel. Her canvases from this period are characterised by:
- free, expressive brushwork,
- rich, sometimes strongly textured surfaces,
- a sense of movement, spontaneity and improvisation.
Later, she gradually shifted from the primacy of gesture towards conceptual objects and assemblages. In these works, she extended painting into space, treating the canvas as part of a larger spatial situation rather than a closed, flat surface.
Assemblages and crossing the boundaries of painting
In her objects and assemblages, Maria Stangret-Kantor combined painted surfaces with three-dimensional elements, found objects and relief structures. Such works:
- blur the line between painting and object,
- engage with the surrounding space,
- echo her experience of theatre and happenings.
Through these strategies, her art fits squarely within the Polish neo-avant-garde, with its emphasis on expanding the field of painting and reflecting on the material presence of the artwork.
Lyrical “Hommages” – the mature phase of her painting
In the mature phase of her career, Maria Stangret-Kantor created lyrical painting cycles entitled “Hommages”. These works are marked by:
- synthetic, carefully composed structures,
- subtle, often restrained colour,
- a poetic, reflective tone,
- references to people, places and events important to the artist.
The “Hommages” cycles show that her painting retained an avant-garde awareness of form while gaining a more intimate, personal and lyrical dimension.
Maria Stangret-Kantor in the canon of the Polish neo-avant-garde
Regardless of the medium and theme – whether informel painting, objects and assemblages or lyrical “Hommages” – Maria Stangret-Kantor’s oeuvre is now recognised as part of the canon of the Polish neo-avant-garde. She was one of the artists who consistently developed her own visual language while remaining in close dialogue with the most important avant-garde circles in Poland.
