Aleksandra Jachtoma – Polish painter and a key figure of post-war art

Aleksandra Jachtoma (born 1932) is a renowned Polish painter and one of the leading figures of post-war Polish art and modern painting in Poland. Her works, distinguished by intense colours and multi-layered depth, have secured her a permanent place in the canon of Polish modern art.

Biography and artistic education of Aleksandra Jachtoma

Aleksandra Jachtoma studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń. She then continued her education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, in the studio of Professor Czesław Rzepiński, and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In 1958, she received her diploma with distinction in the studio of Professor Kazimierz Tomorowicz at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts.

In 1963, the artist co-founded the Warsaw art group “Rekonesans”, bringing together painters interested in new forms of expression in contemporary painting. This activity further strengthened her position on the art scene in Warsaw and throughout Poland.

Artistic style – colour, structure and modern sensibility

The painting of Aleksandra Jachtoma is characterised by intense, saturated colour and a multi-layered structure of the painted surface. Her canvases often combine elements of observation with a strong inclination towards synthetic, sometimes almost abstract compositions, in which colour becomes the main carrier of emotion and space.

Key features of Aleksandra Jachtoma’s style include:

  • expressive, sophisticated use of colour,
  • rich, layered paint surface that builds a deep pictorial space,
  • subtle tension between line, shape and colour fields,
  • poetic, emotional character of the compositions.

Thanks to these qualities, Aleksandra Jachtoma’s paintings are recognised as important examples of Polish modern painting and remain present in the discourse on post-war art in Poland.

Exhibitions and international presence

Aleksandra Jachtoma has taken part in numerous exhibitions in Poland and abroad. Over the years, she has had more than thirty solo exhibitions, which played a crucial role in shaping her reputation as one of the most important Polish women painters of her generation.

Her paintings have been shown in group exhibitions devoted to the development of Polish contemporary painting and post-war art. As a result, her work continues to be rediscovered by new audiences, art historians and collectors interested in the evolution of 20th-century and early 21st-century Polish painting.

The significance of Aleksandra Jachtoma’s achievements is confirmed by prestigious art awards. She is a laureate of, among others:

  • the Award of the Minister of Culture and Art for her lifetime artistic achievement (1987),
  • the Cyprian Kamil Norwid Award,
  • the Jan Cybis Award (2003), granted by the Warsaw District of the Association of Polish Artists and Designers (ZPAP), one of the most important distinctions for painters in Poland.
