Category: Painting

Artistic style: Abstract

Technique: Oil on canvas

Dimensions: 175 × 130 cm

The work is a formal study of the relationship between dense texture and strong chromatic contrast. The composition is based on the juxtaposition of a dark, almost black background area in the upper part of the canvas with bright, amorphous masses of colour in the lower section. The central figure is stripped of clear contours and broken down into autonomous planes of colour: a yellow-ochre with a red accent on the left, and an elaborate, multi-layered structure of pink, purple and white on the right.

In the upper, dark section of the painting, there is a sinuous, linear form in silvery-white tones, characterised by an extremely high degree of textural relief. In the top left-hand corner of the composition, there is a circular, yellow-orange patch with irregular edges, which acts as a counterpoint to the cooler tones of the background. The entire work is executed in oil using thick impasto, which lends the surface of the painting a sculptural quality and emphasises the physical presence of the pigment.
The absence of anecdotal detail shifts the focus from the subject matter to the process and the painterly material.

On a formal level, this painting bears a direct resemblance to Chaim Soutine’s creative method. This analogy is evident in the way the medium of paint is treated as a living, organic substance. As with Soutine, in Cieśniewski’s work form undergoes deformation and ‘dissolution’ under the influence of a vigorous painterly gesture, whilst the impasto texture becomes the primary vehicle of expression, relegating the illustrative function to the background.

Wojciech Cieśniewski – Festyn, 2020

Wojciech Cieśniewski – Festyn, 2020 is a large-format oil painting on canvas measuring 175 × 130 cm. The work belongs to the field of contemporary abstract painting, where dense painterly matter, expressive gesture and strong chromatic contrast create an image with an almost sculptural presence.

Description of the painting

The composition is based on the confrontation between a dark, almost black upper section of the canvas and bright, amorphous masses of colour in the lower part. The painting operates through strong chromatic contrast: deep blacks and blues meet yellow, red, pink, violet, white and blue.

The central form is deprived of a clear contour and broken into autonomous colour planes. On the left, a yellow-ochre mass with a red accent dominates, while on the right, an extended multilayered structure of pink, violet and white unfolds. As a result, the image loses narrative clarity, and the emphasis shifts from anecdotal subject matter to the energy of painterly material.

Matter, colour and impasto

In Festyn, paint becomes the principal carrier of expression. Cieśniewski uses thick impasto, giving the surface of the canvas an almost sculptural character. Pigment not only constructs the image, but also creates a physical structure: relief, trace of gesture and record of intense painterly action.

In the dark upper register, a winding linear form appears in silvery-white tones. Its high relief texture contrasts with the dark background and introduces an element of movement. The yellow-orange patch in the upper left corner acts as a counterweight to the cooler tones of the painting.

Abstraction and painterly process

Although the title Festyn may suggest a festive scene, movement and event, the painting does not develop a story in an illustrative way. The artist reduces anecdotal detail and focuses instead on process, deformation and the physical presence of colour. Painting becomes a record of energy, gesture and tension between form and the dissolution of form.

The work may be read as a composition on the border between representation and abstraction. Fragmentary, dispersed shapes may evoke associations with figure, movement, light or scene, yet they remain subordinated to the autonomy of painterly matter.

Artistic context

In formal terms, Festyn may be compared with the expressive language of Chaim Soutine. The affinity is visible in the treatment of paint as a living, organic substance and in the deformation of form under the pressure of a forceful painterly gesture.

As in Soutine’s work, the painting does not merely serve the representation of a subject, but becomes a space of intense struggle with matter. Impasto, deformation and chromatic tension shift the meaning of the work towards a purely painterly experience — physical, sensual and emotional.

Technique and scale

The work is executed in oil on canvas. Its large format, 175 × 130 cm, strengthens the impact of the painting and allows the viewer to enter into direct contact with gesture, texture and colour. The scale of the work emphasises its dynamic character and monumentalises the seemingly ephemeral subject of a fair or festivity.

Festyn is a work in which painting functions as an intense surface of event. Colour, texture and gesture create an image of strong physicality, going beyond a simple division between abstraction and figuration.
