Artistic style: Figuration

Technique: Oil on canvas

Dimensions: 70 × 100 cm

The painting constitutes a formal analysis of a figural scene set within a landscape subjected to a strong painterly deconstruction. The composition is based on a vertical division of the plane, marked by a central, yellow-ochre line that divides the space into two spheres. Within this defined arrangement, the artist places three human figures, rendered in a synthetic manner and devoid of anatomical detail, suggesting a scene of an encounter.

On the left-hand side of the composition, a dark figure wearing a headdress is visible, the outline of which partially merges with the cool, turquoise-and-white mass of the background. In the centre of the painting are two further figures, rendered in warm browns and reds, which create a dominant colour scheme in the central section of the canvas. The right-hand side of the work suggests a garden, outlined by rhythmic pink and purple patches and green planes in the lower register. The whole is characterised by a dense impasto, where the paint itself becomes a structural element on a par with colour and line.

In formal terms, this work bears a close resemblance to Chaim Soutine’s technique, particularly in the way the human figure is treated as an integral part of the dense painterly matter. As with Soutine, in Cieśniewski’s work the figures lose their autonomous form in favour of a dynamic structure of paint, which absorbs the silhouettes and distorts their contours. The method of constructing the image through the layering of pigment and the tendency towards deformation resulting from the painterly gesture directly refer to Soutine’s method of translating observation into the language of the physical expression of matter.

Wojciech Cieśniewski – The Goldman Brothers, 2023

Wojciech Cieśniewski – The Goldman Brothers, 2023 is an oil painting on canvas measuring 70 × 100 cm. The work belongs to the field of contemporary figurative painting, in which a scene of encounter is subjected to intense painterly deconstruction and the figures become part of the dense, expressive matter of the image.

Description of the painting

The composition presents three human silhouettes placed in a landscape or garden-like space, built from vibrating patches of green, turquoise, white, pink and violet. The figures are treated synthetically, without anatomical detail, so the scene does not function as a realistic reconstruction, but rather as a painterly memory, a trace of presence or a visual record of an encounter.

The painting is structured around a clear vertical division of the pictorial plane. A central yellow-ochre line organises the composition and separates it into two zones, where the tension between figure, landscape and painterly matter unfolds. This division gives the scene rhythm, but does not stabilise it completely — the whole remains dynamic, open and painterly dispersed.

Figures and space

On the left side, a dark figure wearing a head covering is visible, its contour partially merging with the cool turquoise-white mass of the background. In the centre, two additional figures appear, built from warm ochres, reds and muted tones. They form the chromatic dominant of the middle section of the canvas.

The right side of the painting suggests a garden or landscape, marked by green planes and rhythmic pink-violet patches. Space is not a neutral background for the figures; it is an active matter that absorbs them, distorts their contours and incorporates them into the pulsating structure of the whole image.

Painterly matter and impasto

The painted surface is characterised by dense impasto. Paint is treated as a physical material that constructs both the figures and the space around them. Visible brushwork, layers of pigment and vibrating colour transitions emphasise the processual character of the composition.

In The Goldman Brothers, painterly matter becomes a structural element equal to colour and line. The figures are not separated from the background; they gradually emerge from it and dissolve back into it. As a result, the painting functions as a record of memory — uncertain, fragmentary and reconstructed through painting.

Artistic context

In formal terms, the painting may be compared with the expressive language of Chaim Soutine, especially in the treatment of the human figure as part of dense, organic painterly matter. As in Soutine’s work, the contour is disturbed, the form deformed and paint itself becomes the primary carrier of emotion.

In Cieśniewski’s painting, the figures lose their autonomy in favour of the dynamic structure of the image. Their presence is both legible and threatened by dissolution. This way of constructing representation corresponds to the artist’s broader interests: memory, history, the trace of the human being and the responsibility of the image towards the past.

Meaning of the title

The title The Goldman Brothers gives the composition a narrative and memory-based dimension. It points to a specific relationship, community or history, but does not explain it in an illustrative way. The artist leaves the viewer before a fragment of a scene in which the identity of the figures is suspended between recognition and disappearance.

The painting may be read as a painterly meditation on human presence in history — on what is remembered, what is erased and what can be restored through the image.

Technique and scale

The work is executed in oil on canvas. Its 70 × 100 cm format preserves the intimate character of the scene while allowing space for intensive work with matter, colour and gesture. This is a painting in which figuration is not the opposite of abstraction, but is organically intertwined with it.
