Wincenty Czwartos – Battle Painting, 2023
Battle Painting by Wincenty Czwartos is an intimate oil painting from 2023 in which the artist radically reduces the traditional subject of war. The title evokes the grand tradition of historical and battle painting, yet the canvas responds with a restrained, abstract and almost diagrammatic language. Instead of heroic figures, dramatic gestures and an elaborate battle scene, the viewer encounters a system of signs, trajectories and tensions.
The work is not pure abstraction, but an attempt to translate the mechanics of armed confrontation into a rigorous painterly scheme. Czwartos is interested not so much in illustrating battle as in revealing its structure: movement, force, direction, resistance and the moment of culmination. In this way, the traditional war painting is transformed into a cool tactical record — a map of conflict in which life and death are reduced to an arrangement of vectors.
The composition is built upon an intense brick-red background. Its undulating, rhythmic texture introduces an atmosphere of unease, as if the pictorial space were heated by fire, smoke, explosion or vibrations in the air. Diagonal luminous bands strengthen the impression of movement and tension. This background is not a neutral field of colour, but an active space of event — dense, unstable and marked by violence.
Onto this heated ground, the artist places cream-coloured rectangular elements that resemble signs marked on a staff map, projectile trajectories, unit movements or scattered fragments. Their arrangement is at once chaotic and directional. In the upper and left parts of the painting, they create a dynamic sequence of movement, suggesting a moment of intensified confrontation. Czwartos presents battle as a structure of tensions in which order and chaos coexist.
A counterpoint to this movement is the long, stable line placed in the lower part of the composition. It may signify a boundary, a front line, a horizon or a reference point around which the entire dynamics of the field are organised. Its horizontal character introduces an element of endurance and resistance, opposed to the dispersed energy of the smaller signs.
The most enigmatic element of the painting is the divided oval form on the right. Its static presence and visual weight make it the focal point of the whole composition. It may be read as a strategic object, bunker, target, observation point or symbolic weight of conflict. In relation to the scattered movement of the rectangles, the oval functions as the gravitational centre of the image — an immobile element around which chaos gathers.
Battle Painting is a modern reinterpretation of the theme of war. Wincenty Czwartos abandons pathos and narrative figuration in favour of geometry, rhythm and synthetic sign. By transferring battle dynamics into the realm of abstraction, the artist reveals the cold, almost mathematical nature of conflict. War is shown not as a spectacle of heroism, but as a system: an arrangement of forces, points, displacements and trajectories.
From a collector’s perspective, the work stands out through its consistent reduction of form, strong composition and important place within Wincenty Czwartos’s wartime iconography. It is a small yet conceptually intense painting, intended for viewers seeking contemporary abstract painting that remains connected to history, conflict and reflection on the mechanisms of violence.
