The painting “Meadow /Leśmian/” is a painterly transposition of literary metaphysics, in which Wincenty Czwartos engages in a visual dialogue with the poetry of Bolesław Leśmian. In the artist’s interpretation, the titular meadow ceases to be an idyll and becomes—in keeping with the spirit of the poet’s lyrics—a space “in between,” a place of existential unfolding and disintegration.

Formally, the work employs a strong, horizontal division into two color zones: the pulsating, flesh-toned pink of the upper section and the cool, sage-green lower section. Both planes are covered by a rhythmic, undulating relief that gives the background an organic, almost tissue-like character. Superimposed on this soft structure are aggressive, black modules—the same ones we recognize as projectiles in the artist’s larger canvases. Their sharp, geometric edges contrast with the fluidity of the background, creating a visual puzzle of impending danger.

Here, Czwartos plays an ironic game with the tradition of landscape painting. The titular “Meadow,” instead of solace, offers anxiety; instead of flowers—black, falling forms evoking instruments of destruction. Czwartos’s art once again sharpens our awareness of the cracks in reality. Beneath the layer of the poetic title lies an image of a battlefield or a borderline situation in which nature and history intertwine in a single, tragic embrace.

Wincenty Czwartos – Meadow /Leśmian/, 2024

Meadow /Leśmian/ by Wincenty Czwartos is an intimate oil painting from 2024, in which the artist creates a painterly transposition of literary metaphysics. The reference to the poetry of Bolesław Leśmian opens the work to interpretations connected with nature, transience, corporeality and existential unease. The titular meadow, however, is not an idyllic space of consolation. It becomes an in-between zone — an area in which organic continuity is violated by signs of violence.

The composition is based on a strong horizontal division into two colour fields. The upper part, rendered in a pulsating, flesh-like pink, evokes associations with living tissue, an unsettling sky or a symbolic space suspended between nature and the body. The lower part, cool and sage green, resembles a simplified, almost abstract plane of landscape. Both zones are joined by a soft, undulating rhythm that gives the background an organic character.

Onto this subtle structure, the artist places black, sharply outlined modules. Their aggressive, geometric forms contrast with the fluidity of the background, introducing tension and violence into the composition. These motifs, known from other works by Wincenty Czwartos as ravens, crows, projectiles, fragments or signs of approaching catastrophe, gain a particular autonomy here. They do not describe a specific event, but function as emblems of threat.

Meadow /Leśmian/ may be read as an ironic engagement with the tradition of landscape painting. Instead of pastoral calm, the viewer encounters an image of disturbance. Instead of flowers — black, falling forms. Instead of nature as a space of harmony — a field of tension in which the organic and the historical are bound together in an unsettling way. Czwartos uses the motif of the meadow to show that even the most poetic space can become a scene of crisis.

The literary presence of Leśmian strengthens the metaphysical dimension of the painting. In the poetry of the author of Łąka, nature is often not merely a background for human experience, but an independent, mysterious being — alive, disturbing and exceeding rational order. Czwartos translates this intuition into painting. His meadow is not a place of observation, but a space of event: a trembling surface into which a dark sign intrudes.

The painting retains an intimate format, yet operates with the intensity of the artist’s larger compositions. The reduction of means — horizontal division, limited colour range and the rhythm of black modules — reinforces its emblematic character. Meadow /Leśmian/ is a work of strong concentration, in which a poetic title is confronted with the vision of a battlefield, a threshold situation and a disrupted order.

From a collector’s perspective, the work stands out through its restrained composition, distinctive symbolism and Wincenty Czwartos’s recognisable artistic language. It is intended for viewers seeking contemporary figurative painting that balances between landscape, abstract sign, literary reference and political-existential metaphor.
