Wincenty Czwartos – Der Blaue Reiter, 2024
Der Blaue Reiter by Wincenty Czwartos is a monumental oil painting from 2024, in which the artist undertakes a penetrating deconstruction of one of the key myths of the European avant-garde. The title’s reference to the group associated with Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc does not lead here towards a utopian vision of spiritual renewal. Instead, Czwartos confronts the avant-garde myth of the blue rider with the weight of history, memory and violence.
The central figure of the rider, entirely immersed in an unnatural blue, becomes a statue-like being — a figure suspended between body, monument and apparition. The monochromatic tonality evokes associations with Andrzej Wróblewski’s “executed blue”, in which colour becomes a sign of death, absence and passage to the other side. In Czwartos’s work, blue is therefore not merely a quotation from the history of the avant-garde. It is an existential code, defining the figure as someone already lost.
The impassive calm of the rider sharply contrasts with the dynamic pose of the horse, shown in the classical levade. The animal, painted with realistic precision, retains the energy of a living body, muscular tension and dramatic movement. On its back the artist places a geometric saddle — a wedge of modernist order inserted into a historical, figurative form. This detail introduces a tension between the tradition of representation and the language of modern reduction.
The rider wears Renaissance clothing and a simple military helmet, giving him the character of a figure taken from history yet deprived of any clear identity. He is not the portrait of a specific hero, but an archetype of a young man forced into the machinery of history. His monumental, almost motionless presence functions like a monument — but a tragic one, dedicated not to triumph, but to sacrifice.
The whole composition is enclosed by a decorative yet ominous border made of rhythmic forms that balance between heraldic suns, stars, explosions and signs of danger. These repeated motifs intensify the atmosphere of siege and inevitability. The frame is not a neutral ornament; it becomes an active field of tension, in which decorativeness turns into violence and the sign of glory into a sign of catastrophe.
Der Blaue Reiter may be read as a painterly riddle in which symbols from different epochs collide and are revalued. The avant-garde blue rider — originally associated with spiritual journey, movement and the utopia of modernity — is transformed here into a figure of absence, war and the anonymous victim of history. Czwartos does not reject the avant-garde tradition, but inscribes it into a broader narrative of memory, violence and the fragility of modernist promises.
From a collector’s perspective, the painting stands out through its monumental format, powerful visual presence and Wincenty Czwartos’s recognisable artistic language. It combines references to Expressionism, the avant-garde, Polish painting history and the classical equestrian portrait, resulting in a work that is formally striking and deeply reflective. It is intended for viewers seeking contemporary figurative painting of high symbolic density and strong historical tension.
