Wincenty Czwartos – Night Knight, 2025
Night Knight by Wincenty Czwartos is a monumental oil painting from 2025, in which the artist conducts an erudite dialogue with art history, Baroque portraiture and the contemporary experience of unease. The work is built on the tension between the elegance of a historical model and the atmosphere of a borderline, almost catastrophic situation. Czwartos transplants the Baroque formula of representation into a contemporary reflection on memory, youth, violence and posthumous glory.
The central figure of the painting directly refers to Anthony van Dyck’s portrait of James Stuart, Duke of Richmond. This quotation, however, is neither a simple homage nor a reconstruction. The artist isolates the historical figure, removes it from its original context and places it within a new, symbolically charged space. As a result, the former aristocratic model is transformed into a young hero suspended between splendour and the spectre of loss.
Into the classical composition of the equestrian portrait, Czwartos introduces an element of modernist rigour. The geometric form of the saddle, built from sharp divisions and flat fields, functions like a wedge inserted into the traditional structure of representation. This detail interrupts the fluidity of Baroque elegance and evokes the language of avant-garde reduction. Two orders therefore meet within the painting: the representative pathos of historical art and the cool discipline of modernist form.
The entire scene is enclosed by a blue floral garland, creating a decorative yet unsettling frame. This characteristic blue may be read as an echo of Andrzej Wróblewski’s “executed blue” — a colour associated with absence, death and the crossing of the boundary of life. In Czwartos’s work, the garland is therefore not merely ornamental. It becomes a frame of posthumous glory, enclosing the figure within the sphere of memory and symbolic distance.
The nocturnal landscape, dark sky and blood-red strip on the horizon intensify the sense of a threshold situation. The space of the painting is not a neutral landscape, but a scene of passage — between day and night, life and death, historical splendour and the contemporary experience of threat. The horse, shown in a dynamic pose, brings energy and movement into the composition, yet the entire image remains marked by stillness and fatalism.
Night Knight may be read as a tragic portrait. The young rider, endowed with the dignity of an old model, is simultaneously inscribed into the order of inevitable fate. He is already almost monumental — beautiful, distant and destined to function as an image of memory. Czwartos reveals how history transforms youth into an icon, and individual life into a sign within a posthumous narrative.
