The painting of The Lovers symbolically refers to the sixth card of the Major Arcana, which traditionally signifies the birth of new love, a positive transition in life, and the need to make a choice. Assigned to the zodiac sign of Gemini, this card indicates both a romantic, passionate relationship born from the depths of the subconscious and the world of dreams, as well as the universal experience of interpersonal relationships that transcend the male-female paradigm. Floral patterns, geometric designs, rich colours and gold flakes bring to mind the aesthetics of Gustav Klimt’s ‘The Kiss’. In Agnieszka Żak’s composition, the motif of scarves is of particular importance – it is not easy to determine whether there are two or three on the canvas, or whether these forms attract or repel each other. This ambivalence becomes a visual metaphor for choices that require reflection and inner balance. In old tarot decks, the Lovers card depicted a man forced to choose between two women. Today, its symbolism has a broader context – the art of making conscious decisions that shape not only an individual’s fate, but also their relationship with the world. Agnieszka Żak’s painting reminds us that love, closeness and choice always remain inextricably intertwined.
