Agnieszka Żak, The lovers from the Major Arcana series, 2025. The painting of The Lovers symbolically refers to the sixth card of the Major Arcana, which traditionally signifies the birth of new love, a positive transition in life, and the need to make a choice. Assigned to the zodiac sign of Gemini, this card indicates both a romantic, passionate relationship born from the depths of the subconscious and the world of dreams, as well as the universal experience of interpersonal relationships that transcend the male-female paradigm. Floral patterns, geometric designs, rich colours and gold flakes bring to mind the aesthetics of Gustav Klimt’s ‘The Kiss’. In Agnieszka Żak’s composition, the motif of scarves is of particular importance – it is not easy to determine whether there are two or three on the canvas, or whether these forms attract or repel each other. This ambivalence becomes a visual metaphor for choices that require reflection and inner balance. In old tarot decks, the Lovers card depicted a man forced to choose between two women. Today, its symbolism has a broader context – the art of making conscious decisions that shape not only an individual’s fate, but also their relationship with the world. Agnieszka Żak’s painting reminds us that love, closeness and choice always remain inextricably intertwined.

Agnieszka Żak, “The Lovers” from the “Major Arcana” series, 2025 – Tarot-inspired contemporary painting

Agnieszka Żak, painting “The Lovers” from the “Major Arcana” series, 2025 refers to the sixth card of the Major Arcana, traditionally associated with the birth of new love, successfully passing a life test and the necessity of making a choice. Linked to the zodiac sign of Gemini, the card points not only to a romantic, passionate relationship emerging from the depths of the subconscious and the world of dreams, but also to the universal experience of human relationships that transcends the simple binary of man and woman.

At the centre of Żak’s composition we see a tangled, dynamic cluster of patterned scarves and textiles. Floral motifs, geometric patterns, a rich, saturated palette of reds, pinks, greens and golds create a hypnotic structure that both attracts and confuses the eye. The use of gold leaf and ornamental borders evokes the aesthetics of Gustav Klimt’s “The Kiss”, translated into a contemporary, sensuous painterly language.

The scarf motif is crucial: it is deliberately unclear whether we are looking at two or three forms, and whether they are drawing closer or drifting apart. This ambiguity becomes a visual metaphor for choices that demand reflection and inner balance. In early Tarot decks, “The Lovers” often showed a man forced to choose between two women. Today the card’s meaning is broader – it speaks about the art of making conscious decisions that shape not only one’s personal destiny but also one’s connections with the world.

Agnieszka Żak’s “The Lovers” reminds us that love, closeness and choice are inseparably intertwined. Combining Tarot symbolism, gilded ornament and the baroque opulence of fabrics with a contemporary reflection on partnership, responsibility and personal freedom, the painting offers a compelling proposition for collectors interested in decorative, figurative contemporary art that addresses fundamental life decisions in a refined visual form.
