Agnieszka Żak, The Fool from the Major Arcana series, 2025. The painting of the Fool refers to the first card of the Major Arcana, depicting a wanderer. It symbolises spontaneity, enthusiasm and openness to new opportunities, often interpreted as ‘positive change’. At the same time, the Fool indicates a lack of attachment to material values, but also human naivety and recklessness. It represents new but ill-considered actions, devoid of awareness of consequences, as well as an attitude that downplays important matters and trivialises their significance. This card is also associated with intuition – it is assigned the number 0, the letter aleph from the Hebrew alphabet, the zodiac sign of Aquarius and the entire trigon (a group of three zodiac signs belonging to the same element) of air. The composition of materials in the painting was designed to resemble a jester’s cap, inspired by the form and colours of costumes worn during the Venetian carnival. The figure of the jester has appeared many times in the history of painting – for example, in Gilles by Antoine Watteau, in Jan Matejko’s Stańczyk, and in Diego Velázquez’s portraits of jesters. However, each of these depictions shows a different set of emotions and meanings that the artist wanted to convey. Agnieszka Żak’s painting refers primarily to lightness, sincerity, a sense of freedom and carefree fun.

Agnieszka Żak, “The Fool”, 2025 – contemporary painting inspired by Tarot and the Major Arcana

Agnieszka Żak, painting “The Fool”, 2025 is part of the artist’s “Major Arcana” series, in which she reinterprets Tarot cards through richly detailed images of patterned fabrics. “The Fool” refers to the first card of the Major Arcana, traditionally depicting a traveller stepping into the unknown. It symbolises spontaneity, enthusiasm and openness to new possibilities, often read as a sign of positive change, but also naivety, carelessness and a lack of awareness of consequences.

At the centre of the composition we see a floating bundle of colourful scarves and textiles, painted with meticulous precision. Floral motifs, geometric patterns and fragments of landscapes fold into a shape reminiscent of a jester’s cap. Żak draws inspiration from the costumes of the Venetian carnival, using an intense palette of purples, turquoise, reds, golds and oranges. Against a soft gradient background the fabric seems to hover in mid-air, evoking a sense of lightness, freedom and playful movement.

In Tarot tradition The Fool is associated with number 0, the Hebrew letter Aleph, the zodiac sign Aquarius and the air trigon. In Żak’s interpretation these references are translated into subtle colour and composition choices rather than literal symbols. The painting suggests intuitive action, a fresh outlook and readiness to take risks, while also hinting at the fragility of human decisions and the tendency to trivialise what is truly important.

The work also enters into dialogue with art history, where jester figures have appeared many times – from Antoine Watteau’s “Gilles” through Jan Matejko’s “Stańczyk” to Diego Velázquez’s portraits of court jesters. Each of these images highlights a different emotional register. Agnieszka Żak’s “The Fool” focuses above all on lightness, honesty, a sense of freedom and carefree joy, inviting viewers to reflect on the fine line between wisdom of intuition and the risk of a reckless step.
