The sculpture is a radical reinterpretation of the Pietà – one of the most important motifs in Christian iconography. Using the ‘doll-like’ figures characteristic of his work, Ambroziak juxtaposes a child’s imagination with brutal reality. Although the work retains the classical composition of the Marian lament, the traditional sacredness gives way here to grotesque deformation and provocative harshness. The work is not an attempt to recreate a religious model, but a critical commentary on the present day, which has lost the capacity for genuine empathy within the framework of former cultural codes.

On a formal level, the artist distorts shapes, drawing on the aesthetics of primitive art and African masks. His treatment of the material – evident in the exposure of rough casting seams – evokes the uncompromising style of Georg Baselitz; Ambroziak’s bronze works mimic the violence and roughness characteristic of the German master’s wooden pieces. The oversized, heavy heads and the unnatural proportions of the limbs lend the figures the character of universal symbols of alienation. These anonymous, humanoid beings – despite clear references to biblical archetypes – become, above all, vessels of contemporary anxiety, the intensity of which is heightened by the deliberately unpolished material.

The psychological significance of the work is based on the contrast between the massiveness of the structure and the vulnerability of the posed figures. The placement of this dramatic group on a high, metal plinth monumentalises this ‘anti-Pieta’, transforming it into a contemporary altar of anxiety. Ambroziak challenges the viewer by raising the question of the human condition in a world where traditional symbols become mere empty shells, incapable of bearing the weight of today’s experiences.

Sylwester Ambroziak – Pieta from the “Innocence” Series, 2026

“Pieta” by Sylwester Ambroziak, from the “Innocence” series, is a 2026 sculpture made of patinated bronze and mounted on a metal pedestal. The work is a radical reinterpretation of the Pieta, one of the most important motifs in Christian iconography. While preserving the recognizable structure of the Marian lament, Ambroziak transforms it into a raw contemporary image of existential unease.

A Contemporary Reinterpretation of the Pieta

Ambroziak uses the doll-like figures characteristic of his artistic language, confronting childlike imagination with the brutality of reality. In this composition, traditional sacred imagery gives way to grotesque deformation, expressive roughness and psychological tension. The sculpture does not attempt to reproduce a religious model, but becomes a critical commentary on the present and a question about the human condition in a world of weakened symbols.

Figuration, Deformation and Expressive Form

Formally, the artist brutalizes shapes, exaggerates proportions and exposes the roughness of the material. Oversized heads, unnatural bodily arrangements and visible casting seams give the sculpture a strong sense of physical intensity. Ambroziak refers to the aesthetics of primitive art, African masks and the expressive tradition of sculpture, creating anonymous humanoid figures with a universal character.

Sculpture as a Contemporary Anti-Pieta

The psychological force of the work is based on the contrast between the massiveness of the sculptural form and the vulnerability of the posed figures. The placement of the group on a tall metal pedestal monumentalizes the composition, giving it the character of a contemporary altar of anxiety. Ambroziak’s “Pieta” confronts the viewer with questions about empathy, suffering and the ability of traditional cultural codes to carry the weight of contemporary experience.
