Stefan Gierowski, “CCCCXX”, 1978 – abstract oil painting on canvas
Stefan Gierowski, “CCCCXX”, 1978, oil on canvas, 116 × 90 cm is a characteristic example of the artist’s mature work and of post-war Polish abstract painting. The composition belongs to his famous series of numbered paintings, in which Gierowski abandons descriptive titles in favour of a pure investigation of light, space and colour.
The centre of the canvas is occupied by a dark, almost black field densely covered with tiny, rhythmically arranged dots of light. These microscopic “stars” create the impression of a pulsating, infinite space – sometimes reminiscent of a night sky, at other times of vibrating matter seen under magnification. Their regular yet slightly disturbed pattern builds a subtle tension between order and chance, a key element in Gierowski’s practice.
The dark interior is framed by a broad, light inner band, contrasted with an even wider, muted, darker outer strip. These three zones – luminous edge, black field and external margin – act like successive thresholds of perception. The viewer feels as if peering into an isolated, autonomous space in which a single point becomes a carrier of energy and the apparent void fills with light.
“CCCCXX” is contemplative in character – an example of autonomous abstraction, devoid of narrative yet strongly affecting the senses. Gierowski treats the canvas as a screen recording the relationship between light and darkness, between the materiality of paint and the illusion of boundless depth. The work fits perfectly into the explorations of Polish modern art of the 1970s and stands out as an important example of spiritual and intellectual approaches to colour and space in contemporary painting.
