Stanisław Czwartos – Złoty Idol, 2024
Złoty Idol by Stanisław Czwartos is an intimate oil painting from 2024, created as a study for Lapidarium. Despite its modest format, the work holds particular importance within the artist’s practice, as it reveals one of the key mechanisms of his painting: the juxtaposition of a classical fragment with a symbolic, almost abstract space. The painting functions as a concentrated expression of larger themes present in Czwartos’s work — cultural memory, ruin, idolatry and the ambiguous status of historical heritage.
The central motif of the composition is a realistically rendered head of a kouros, set within a geometric landscape. The ancient fragment is isolated from its original context and transferred into a space without clear coordinates of time or place. In this way, Złoty Idol becomes a painterly embodiment of the “aesthetics of ruin”, entering into a discreet dialogue with the sculptures of Igor Mitoraj. Classical beauty appears here not as wholeness, but as a surviving trace — a fragment that has endured while losing its original function.
An essential aspect of the work is the tension between figuration and abstraction. The kouros-like face is rendered with sculptural precision, while the surrounding landscape takes the form of simplified, geometric bands. Unlike many other works by Stanisław Czwartos, this composition does not include a border. This significant formal decision shifts the emphasis away from the vanitas tradition and towards a poetics closer to Surrealism. The absence of an inscribed frame makes the painting feel more open, quiet and enigmatic. It does not direct the viewer towards a single reflection on transience, but leaves them facing a mysterious image suspended in an undefined space.
The titular idol may be read in multiple ways: as a relic of ancient worship, a symbol of a lost ideal, a figure of memory or an image of a civilisation that transforms its own past into an object of contemplation. The golden tonality of the face intensifies the sacred yet ambivalent character of the representation. The idol is precious but silent; beautiful, yet detached from any living context.
Złoty Idol is an example of intimate figurative painting with considerable symbolic density. The work stands out through its focused composition, subtle colour palette and the recognisable artistic language of Stanisław Czwartos. From a collector’s perspective, it is both an important study for a larger cycle and an autonomous painting with strong interpretive potential.
