The painting constitutes a brutal and literal study of emotion, reflecting Stanisław Czwartos’s characteristic approach of translating linguistic metaphors into the raw language of painting. On a small canvas, the artist depicts a bust of a man, whose image becomes a vehicle for a powerful, negative emotion, already suggested in the title itself.

A key element of the composition is the ‘bile’ oozing from the figure’s mouth. Instead of a realistic fluid, Czwartos paints several sharp, straight rays that cut through the picture plane. This schematic, graphic mode of representation suggests a perverse play on meanings: emotion – hatred, bitterness or aggression – is here reduced to a rigorous painterly sign. The yellow lines, reminiscent of vectors, transform the physiological act of spitting into a conscious artistic gesture.

The background of the painting is a uniform, saturated expanse of blue. This pure colour not only frames the composition but also contrasts aggressively with the warm tones of the body and the bright yellow of the rays, making the figure appear isolated from any real space.

As a result, *Gęba plująca żółcią* is an ironic commentary on the very act of painting. Here, Andrzej Wróblewski’s existential radicalism is projected onto Jarosław Modzelewski’s analytical rigour, creating an image of a man who literally uses “bile” (both as a pigment and an emotion) as his primary tool of the trade.

Stanisław Czwartos – Mouth Spitting Bile, 2023

Mouth Spitting Bile by Stanisław Czwartos is an intimate oil painting from 2023 in which the artist translates a linguistic metaphor into a direct, austere painterly language. The titular act of “spitting bile” is treated almost literally, yet instead of a realistic physiological scene, we encounter a synthetic image of affect: anger, bitterness, aggression and toxic speech.

On a small canvas, Czwartos depicts the bust of a man isolated against a uniform, saturated blue background. The figure is shown frontally, with a slight turn of the face, in a manner that appears calm and static. This stillness, however, is violently interrupted by yellow lines emerging from the mouth. They organise the entire composition and give it the character of a sharp, almost physical discharge.

The key element of the painting is the “bile” represented as several straight, radiating lines. Instead of liquid, there is a sign: graphic, sharp and vector-like. Czwartos transforms emotion into structure, and the physiological act of spitting into a deliberate painterly gesture. The yellow rays cut through the blue space like a message, an attack, an impulse or the energy of speech that does not create dialogue, but enacts violence.

The tension between body and sign is especially important in the painting. The man’s face and torso are built from warm brownish-red and greenish tones, giving the figure weight, corporeality and psychological intensity. Against this background, the yellow lines function as an alien, almost technical element — a schematic record of affect that emerges from the human being and immediately becomes an autonomous form.

The uniform blue background isolates the figure from any realistic context. We do not know who the man is or towards whom his gesture is directed. As a result, the painting does not become an illustration of a specific situation, but a model of communicative tension. It is a portrait of a human being at the moment when speech ceases to be a tool of understanding and becomes a carrier of aggression.

Mouth Spitting Bile may be read as an ironic commentary on contemporary communication, but also on painting itself. Bile is both a metaphor for negative affect and a pigment — the material substance of the image. Czwartos shows that emotion can be reduced to colour, line and direction. In this sense, the painting balances between brutal literalness and cool formal analysis.

The work belongs to Stanisław Czwartos’s characteristic strategy of combining figuration with synthetic sign. The artist creates an image that is restrained yet semantically dense: a portrait, an emblem and a study of language at once. From a collector’s perspective, the painting stands out through its intimate format, strong colour contrast and striking metaphor concerning speech, affect and communicative violence.
