Stanisław Czwartos – Memento, 2025
Memento by Stanisław Czwartos is an intimate oil painting from 2025, in which the artist combines the formula of portraiture with epitaphic and vanitas traditions. The composition — a frontal female bust set against a landscape — evokes distant echoes of Renaissance painting, where the human figure was often placed between the material world and the symbolic space of memory. In Czwartos’s work, however, the portrait does not serve as a psychological study of an individual sitter. Instead, it becomes an image of memory, endurance and transience.
The central figure is presented with monumental gravity. Her metallic modelling, cool surface and architectural hairstyle give her the character of a sculptural monument. The female bust seems suspended between body and monument, between living presence and posthumous sign. In this sense, the painting may be read as a painterly realisation of the Horatian idea non omnis moriar — “I shall not wholly die”.
The geometrised facial features strip the figure of individual traits, transforming her into an archetypal memento. This is not a portrait of a specific person, but a figure of memory: synthetic, concentrated and free from anecdotal detail. Her intense gaze is directed at the viewer, yet it does not remain solely within the realm of psychological contact. It appears to move beyond biological life towards a form of endurance that only art can secure.
An essential element of the painting is the golden border bearing the inscription Memento mori. The frame is not merely decorative. It places the work within the tradition of vanitas imagery, reminding us of the inevitability of death and the transience of the human body. At the same time, it creates a tension with the promise of immortality embedded in the very formula of the image-as-monument. Czwartos therefore juxtaposes two seemingly contradictory ideas: the awareness of an ending and the desire to be preserved through the image.
The landscape in the background strengthens the symbolic character of the composition. It is not a realistic view, but an ordered space of contemplation — quiet, distanced and almost timeless. Against this background, the female bust acquires a particular solemnity, as if emerging from the boundary between history, memory and eternity.
Memento is an example of intimate figurative painting with strong visual concentration. Stanisław Czwartos creates an image that is restrained yet symbolically dense. The work combines classical references, the vanitas tradition, the idea of the epitaph and a precise formal language, resulting in a painting of high formal quality and clear interpretive potential.
