Stanisław Czwartos – Lapidarium, 2025
Lapidarium by Stanisław Czwartos is a moving painterly meditation on the status of the historical fragment, the fragility of cultural memory and the inevitability of passing time. The artist creates a symbolic landscape in which architecture is replaced by monumental heads of ancient kouroi. The painting thus becomes a vision of a world after catastrophe — a space where only fragments, masks and stone traces of lost ideals have survived.
The composition is enclosed by a rigorous border bearing the inscription Memento mori, placing the work within the tradition of vanitas imagery. This is not merely a decorative frame, but an essential semantic element of the painting. The repeated inscription reminds us of the transience of forms, bodies, civilisations and value systems. The nostalgic scenery is cut through by sharp, zigzagging bands that rhythmically slice across the surface of the painting. Their form suggests scythe blades, beams of light or violent cuts in the structure of the landscape. They introduce tension and movement into the composition, breaking the apparent stillness of the lapidarium. This is a space not only of contemplation, but of constant disintegration and reconstruction of memory.
From between the geometric bands emerge heads with classical features. Their varied colouring — from luminous gold to deep black — may be interpreted as a metaphor for successive stages of endurance, disappearance and the decay of cultural memory. Gold suggests sacralisation and value, silvery grey evokes the coldness of stone, while black introduces the dimension of absence, oblivion and death.
Lapidarium is an example of figurative painting in which a classical motif undergoes contemporary reinterpretation. Stanisław Czwartos combines precise composition, a symbolic border and monumental forms with a reflection on the transience of culture.
