Arrangement by Stanisław Czwartos is an oil painting from 2024 in which the artist examines relations of power, control and the conventional nature of social gestures. The composition is based on a clear, almost hieratic arrangement of three figures. Two men stand on either side facing one another, while between them, frontally and axially positioned, is the central figure. The symmetrical arrangement gives the scene an official, static and ceremonial character.
The titular “arrangement” materialises in the gesture of a handshake, placed at the level of the central figure’s abdomen. This gesture becomes the true centre of the painting — not the faces, not emotions, not dialogue, but the formal sign of agreement. Czwartos isolates it with a pink frame, which functions like a visual marker, a crop or a rectangular annotation. In this way, the handshake is treated as evidence, procedure or a painting within a painting.
The central figure functions as a peculiar mediator. Its body, painted in a cool grey tonality, is positioned precisely on the axis of the composition. Behind it runs a dark green vertical band, reinforcing the impression of separation and ritual isolation. The nakedness of this figure contrasts with the clothed figures on either side, introducing a tension between bodily vulnerability and the formal nature of the agreement being made.
The painting suggests that the essence of the situation does not unfold in the realm of emotion, but in a cold, conventional gesture. The handshake may signify agreement, transaction, compromise or a mechanism of power that conceals the true stakes of the arrangement. Czwartos does not specify who the figures are or what their relationship concerns. As a result, the scene takes on the character of a model — a universal image of dependency, mediation and hidden exchange.
The synthetic background plays an essential role. Gradients of blue, dark green and bands near the ground in pinkish and darker tones create a space without a specific location. This is not a realistic scene, but a symbolic field of forces. Figures, colours, frames and planes function as elements of a single construction — equally important formally and semantically.
Arrangement is an example of Stanisław Czwartos’s figurative painting in which the apparent simplicity of the scene conceals a complex commentary on social relations. The artist uses synthetic form, restrained facial expression and precise placement of elements to create an image of considerable analytical force. It is a painting about mechanisms of agreement, but also about what such agreement conceals.
From a collector’s perspective, the painting stands out through its large format, distinctive composition and Stanisław Czwartos’s recognisable visual language. It combines figurative narration with a structural approach to the image, resulting in a visually strong, symbolic work open to interpretations concerning power, the body, negotiation and social rituals.
