Ryszard Woźniak – Multiple Painting (Idiot Icon) 1/9, 1995
Ryszard Woźniak – Multiple Painting (Idiot Icon) 1/9, 1995 is an oil painting on canvas measuring 100 × 81 cm. The work belongs to the field of figurative painting and is a striking example of the artist’s critical and ironic visual language, shaped by the experience of the New Expression and a postmodern engagement with the tradition of the image.
Description of the painting
The composition presents a centrally placed figure of synthetic, almost totemic construction. The figure is reduced to simple geometric forms, dominated by a structure of two triangles. The intense red of the silhouette contrasts with the bright ornamental background, filled with repeated motifs resembling hearts, signs and decorative patterns.
Despite its simplified form, the figure has a strong presence. Its frontal, hieratic position evokes associations with the icon, yet the title immediately undermines the sacred order of the image. Woźniak builds tension between an elevated form and a provocative title, between the decorative lightness of the background and the existential weight of the figure.
Icon, irony and subversion
Multiple Painting (Idiot Icon) 1/9 may be read as a radical deconstruction of the tradition of religious painting. The artist does not quote the icon in an affirmative way; instead, he uses its structure, frontality and hieratic quality to create an anti-sacred, ironic and unsettling image.
At the centre of the work stands a figure deprived of individual features, reduced to a sign, a mask or a social type. The collision between the title and the composition forces the viewer to confront questions of dignity, exclusion, stereotype, linguistic violence and the position of the individual within collective symbolic systems.
Artistic context
In compositional terms, the painting may be compared with the hieratic quality and synthetic language of form associated with the work of Jerzy Nowosielski. In Woźniak’s painting, however, such references are subjected to sharp reinterpretation. Where the tradition of the icon implies silence, transcendence and spiritual order, Woźniak introduces irony, provocation and a bitter commentary on the condition of contemporary man.
The work also belongs to a broader context of Polish art of the 1980s and 1990s, when painting became a tool of critique, resistance and dismantling of official symbolic languages. Woźniak uses painting as a field of confrontation: between sacred and profane, form and title, sign and its social consequences.
Technique and form
The painting is executed in oil on canvas. The economy of formal means strengthens its impact. The artist uses a flat, synthetic figure, a restrained colour palette and an ornamental background that acts as a counterpoint to the central form.
The strong contrast between the red figure, the bright background and the black contour drawing gives the composition the directness of a sign. The painting functions simultaneously as an image, an emblem and a commentary — intense, concise and deliberately uncomfortable.
