The painting is an intriguing study of everyday life framed within a postmodern still life, where the prosaic title becomes the key to understanding the existential weight of routine. Woźniak divides the canvas into two spheres along a diagonal axis: the left, dominated by dynamic, gestural brushstrokes, and the right, in which he places a tightly packed group of objects. The central composition – consisting of pictogram-like fruit, a block of raw material and twigs of pine needles – is framed by a distinctive, stepped border. This graphic device isolates the ‘shopping’ from the painterly background, conferring upon it the status of alienated objects suspended in a vacuum.

In this edition, Woźniak’s work can be directly compared to the achievements of Patrick Caulfield and the early digital aesthetics of the turn of the century. He shares with the British master of Pop Art a use of strong, unambiguous outlines that strip objects of their softness, transforming them into frozen symbols. In turn, the multi-layered ‘aura’ surrounding the objects serves as a painterly anticipation of graphic tools, reminiscent of digital cut-out paths from editing software. Woźniak, employing this cool manner, creates a universal record of the individual’s struggle with the materiality of everyday life. In his interpretation, the to-do list ceases to be transparent, becoming an autonomous, almost monumental entity, imbued with the tension between painterly freedom and the rigour of everyday structures.

Ryszard Woźniak – Shopping and Things to Do II 1/5, 2001

Ryszard Woźniak – Shopping and Things to Do II 1/5, 2001 is an acrylic painting on canvas measuring 100 × 81 cm. The work belongs to the field of figurative painting and is a characteristic example of the artist’s reflection on everyday life, sign, object and the tension between painterly freedom and the order of contemporary obligations.

Description of the painting

The painting presents a group of everyday objects: fruit, a raw geometric block and branches of coniferous greenery. These elements are arranged in a compact composition on the right side of the canvas. The left side remains more painterly, gestural and open, dominated by light, dynamic brushwork.

The composition is structured around a diagonal division of the pictorial plane. On one side, there is a free, almost abstract area of painted background; on the other, a tightly organised group of objects. This contrast creates tension between chance and order, gesture and list, painterly energy and the structure of everyday tasks.

Everyday life as subject

Shopping and Things to Do II 1/5 may be read as a postmodern still life. The prosaic title does not diminish the importance of the image; on the contrary, it reveals the existential weight of ordinary actions. Shopping, obligations and small daily matters are transformed into an autonomous visual sign.

Woźniak presents everyday life as a structure that organises individual existence. The objects are not neutral elements of a still life, but carriers of routine, repetition, memory and pressure. A list of things to do becomes a metaphor for contemporary experience: fragmented, organised and charged with tension.

Form, contour and digital aura

The central group of objects is surrounded by a distinctive, multilayered outline. This stepped contour isolates the depicted elements from the painterly background, giving them the status of cut-out, suspended signs. The objects appear both material and strangely detached from reality.

This device evokes the aesthetics of early digital tools, clipping paths and graphic outlines characteristic of the turn of the millennium. Woźniak combines the language of painting with the logic of reproduced, edited and processed images, creating a composition on the border between still life, pictogram and visual diagram.

Artistic context

The painting may be compared with the work of Patrick Caulfield, especially in its use of strong contour, synthetic representation of objects and the tension between decorativeness and cool graphic precision. In Woźniak’s work, the contour not only defines form, but also creates distance between the viewer and the represented subject.

At the same time, the work retains Ryszard Woźniak’s characteristic irony and critical view of reality. A daily list of shopping and errands is elevated to the status of an image-symbol, in which the banality of everyday life reveals its hidden intensity.

Technique and colour

The painting is executed in acrylic on canvas. Acrylic allows the artist to combine flat, clearly defined forms with more gestural painterly passages. The pale background, sharp contours, intense yellows and oranges of the fruit, and the cool whites and greys of the central block build a composition based on contrast and visual rhythm.

In this work, painterly freedom meets graphic discipline. As a result, the painting functions simultaneously as a still life, a commentary on everyday routine and a reflection on the status of the image in the age of reproduction and digital processing of signs.
