The large-format landscape *Sound Policy* is a composition based on a horizontal division of the canvas, depicting a scene at sunset. The lower, dark section of the painting, with almost completely blurred details, contrasts with the lighter line of the sky, where the warm colours of the sunset give way to cool greys. A distinctive feature of the painting is the dynamic, arched form on the left, executed with a bold brushstroke, which breaks up the static composition of the horizon.

The painting is steeped in an atmosphere of contemplative calm, underpinned by a hint of existential unease. The composition, based on a radical division between the dark, almost spherical depth of the pit and the luminous strip of the horizon, creates an almost metaphysical space. In the mood of the work, one can detect a distant echo of the work of Leon Spilliaert – the same fascination with emptiness, solitude and the boundary between the real and the dreamlike. The mysterious, organic form hovering above the horizon breaks the static nature of the landscape, becoming dreamlike

Aleksander Baszynski – The Politics of Sound, 2022

Aleksander Baszynski – The Politics of Sound, 2022 is a large-format oil painting on canvas measuring 130 × 150 cm. The work belongs to the field of contemporary figurative painting, although its strength lies not in narrative representation, but in atmosphere, light and the tension between landscape and abstract form.

Description of the painting

The composition is based on a clear horizontal division of the canvas. The lower part of the painting is deep, dark and almost entirely deprived of readable detail. The upper section opens onto a strip of sky, where the warm colours of sunset gradually shift into cool blues, greys and subdued light.

On the left side of the painting, a dynamic arched form appears, created with a decisive and fluid painterly gesture. Its presence breaks the static structure of the horizon and introduces an ambiguous element into the composition. It may be read as a trace of movement, an organic shape, an afterimage or a sound-like form inscribed into the landscape.

Landscape, light and ambiguity

The Politics of Sound creates an atmosphere of contemplative calm, underpinned by a note of existential unease. The painting does not present landscape as a neutral view, but as a liminal space: between day and night, light and darkness, reality and dream.

The radical division between the dark, almost bottomless lower part of the canvas and the luminous band of the horizon gives the composition a metaphysical dimension. This is a painting in which the silence of the landscape is interrupted by a single, mysterious painterly gesture.

Technique and form

The work is executed in oil on canvas. Baszynski uses soft tonal transitions, deep darkness and subtle light, avoiding an excess of detail. The blurred and obscured areas of the painting intensify the sense of distance, disappearance and uncertainty of vision.

The large scale of the painting allows the composition to function not only as a landscape image, but also as an experiential space. The viewer is confronted with the almost complete darkness of the lower part of the canvas and the delicate, distant light of the horizon.

Artistic context

The mood of the work carries a distant echo of Léon Spilliaert’s art — a fascination with emptiness, solitude, the horizon and the boundary between the real and the imagined. As in the Belgian artist’s work, landscape is not merely a representation of place, but a psychological state and a space of projection.

The mysterious form hovering above the horizon deepens the aura of ambiguity. Instead of explaining the scene, it opens it to multiple readings, turning the painting into a record of tension, memory and silent presence.
