The painting is a striking example of a contemporary ‘interior portrait’, in which the artist transcends the boundaries of realism, imbuing an ordinary space with a sense of metaphysical unease. The monumental canvas depicts an austere attic room, framed within an almost symmetrical, rigorous compositional arrangement. The centrally placed window, the sole source of light, emits a cool, almost mystical glow that softly contours the texture of the bedding and the cast-iron radiator, only to give way to deep, impenetrable shadows at the edges of the painting. This technique creates a claustrophobic yet dreamlike atmosphere in which everyday life is elevated to the status of an object of contemplation

Beata Stankiewicz’s work in this edition can be directly compared to that of Edward Hopper and Vilhelm Hammershøi. She shares with the American master of realism a treatment of light as the primary building block of drama, as well as a poignant sense of loneliness and alienation emanating from the empty furniture. In turn, the austerity of form, the sterility of the interior and the subdued palette of whites and greys constitute a clear dialogue with Hammershøi’s intimism. As with the Danish painter, the deserted room in Stankiewicz’s work ceases to be merely a backdrop for human activity, becoming an autonomous entity saturated with silence. Using local props – characteristic striped bedspreads or an old-fashioned radiator – the artist creates a universal record of the place’s memory, requiring the viewer’s attentiveness to perceive, within the still scene, the tension between an intimate refuge and an existential void

Beata Stankiewicz – Lamus, 2024

Beata Stankiewicz – Lamus, 2024 is an oil painting on canvas measuring 85 × 45 cm. The work belongs to the field of contemporary figurative painting and reflects the artist’s characteristic interest in interiors, light, silence and the memory of place.

Description of the painting

The painting depicts a forgotten utilitarian space — the titular storage room, a place where objects are set aside, removed from everyday use and left at the margins of attention. Beata Stankiewicz uses a narrow vertical canvas format, which intensifies the sense of enclosure, intimacy and concentration.

The key element of the composition is a small window placed high in the room. Through its rectangular form, raw daylight enters the interior, casting a geometric glow onto the wall and extracting fragments of the room from the darkness: a washbasin, a worktop, objects, textiles and the outlines of the space. Light does not merely describe the interior; it gives it emotional and symbolic weight.

Light and space

In Lamus, light performs a structural role. It builds the geometry of the painting, organises the interior and brings out details that might otherwise remain unnoticed. The almost black lower part of the composition contrasts with the bright rectangles of the windows and the cool reflected light on the walls.

Through this interplay of light and shadow, a prosaic room acquires an almost sacred character. The storage space is no longer merely a back room or utility area; it becomes a place of contemplation, where ordinary objects reveal a melancholic beauty and the trace of passing time.

Artistic context

Beata Stankiewicz’s painting may be situated within the field of contemporary metaphysical realism. In Lamus, one can observe references to the tradition of Edward Hopper, especially in the way light organises the geometry of the composition and gives the interior a sense of psychological tension.

Equally significant is the affinity with the painting of Vilhelm Hammershøi: the muted palette of browns, greys and subdued tones, the compositional discipline and the atmosphere of deep stillness. Although the interior is filled with matter, it contains the same quiet, spiritual aura associated with the empty rooms of the Danish master.

Technique and atmosphere

The painting is executed in oil on canvas. The artist works with subtle tonal transitions, deep shadow and focused light, gradually revealing the structure of the room. The narrow format emphasises the vertical rhythm of the composition and strengthens the impression of entering a closed, private space.

Lamus is a painting of intense stillness. It can be read as a painterly meditation on permanence and transience, on the presence of objects and on the ability of light to transform an ordinary interior into a meaningful space.
