Aleksander Baszynski – Rok, 2026
Aleksander Baszynski – Rok, 2026 is an oil painting on canvas measuring 35 × 30 cm. The work belongs to the field of contemporary figurative painting, in which a recognisable floral motif is transformed into an intense study of matter, light and painterly surface.
Description of the painting
The painting depicts a single pansy flower emerging from a deep, dark background. The floral motif is not treated as a decorative detail, but as a point of departure for an exploration of painterly materiality. The bright, illuminated form of the flower contrasts with the sombre surrounding space, creating a composition based on the tension between delicacy and rawness.
The central pansy form attracts attention through its soft, almost luminous modelling. At the same time, the surface of the painting is marked by cracks, abrasions, traces of intervention and painterly disruptions. As a result, the flower does not function as a clean naturalistic motif, but as an autonomous painterly entity embedded in a dense material structure.
Technique and surface
In Rok, Baszynski uses layering and a deliberate “fatiguing” of the picture plane. The paint does not form a smooth, uniform surface; instead, it is subjected to rubbing, disruption and exposure of the ground. The result is a distinctive texture in which the colour layer merges with the rawness of the canvas.
This is painting with a strong physical presence. The material surface is not a neutral support for the image, but one of the central subjects of the work. The tension between the dark background and the illuminated centre reinforces the dramatic chiaroscuro quality of the composition.
Artistic context
The painting can be read in dialogue with the work of Nicola Samorì, particularly in its deconstruction of the painted surface and deliberate disturbance of pictorial illusion. Instead of a classical finish, the artist builds a structure full of traces, cracks and abrasions, allowing the process of making to remain visible.
The material density of the work also evokes associations with the painting of Anselm Kiefer. As in Kiefer’s practice, the surface of the painting acquires weight, while the represented motif becomes a carrier of broader tension: between beauty and degradation, nature and destruction, light and darkness.
