The painting depicts the silhouettes of palm trees against a deep, dark background, rendered in the artist’s characteristic sombre tones. A key technical feature here is the numerous light-coloured areas, which are not the result of applying light-coloured paint, but rather the effect of mechanically scraping away layers of paint down to the raw surface of the canvas. This subtractive gesture lends the composition an extraordinary chiaroscuro dynamic – it is not light that ‘falls’ on the palm trees, but is drawn out from beneath through physical intervention in the material of the work.

Conceptually, Baszyński enters into a direct dialogue here with the work of Nicola Samori. He shares with the Italian artist a technique of exposing the substrate and treating the painting as a multi-layered structure that can be ‘wounded’ or scraped away to reach its foundation. At the same time, the harshness of this method and the choice of an exotic motif subjected to such radical treatment bring to mind the work of Anselm Kiefer. As with the German master, Baszyński’s painting becomes an autonomous object with a strong physical presence, where the tension between the decorative theme of palm trees and the brutality of the abrasions creates an atmosphere of melancholy and visual saturation.

Aleksander Baszynski – Untitled, 2018

Aleksander Baszynski – Untitled, 2018 is a painting executed in oil and acrylic on canvas. Measuring 80 × 80 cm, the work belongs to the field of contemporary figurative painting, in which a recognisable motif is subjected to an intense, almost destructive painterly process.

Description of the painting

The composition depicts silhouettes of palm trees emerging from a deep, dark background. The painting is maintained in the artist’s characteristic sombre tonality, transforming a landscape motif into a space of tension rather than exotic decoration. The palms do not form an idyllic scene; instead, they become carriers of memory, unease and visual intensity.

The key formal device is the presence of numerous light openings across the surface of the canvas. These bright areas are not created by applying light paint, but by mechanically rubbing and scraping through the painted layers down to the raw canvas. As a result, light in the painting is not simply cast onto the motif; it is extracted from beneath the painted surface.

Technique and materiality

In Untitled, Baszynski treats the painting as a multilayered structure. The gesture of scraping and abrading the surface reveals the physical presence of the canvas and intensifies the material character of the work. This subtractive technique creates a dynamic chiaroscuro and allows the composition to function both as an image and as an autonomous painterly object.

The contrast between the dark background, the fragmented palm motif and the exposed light areas gives the painting a strong visual presence. The work combines a figurative starting point with expressive surface intervention, where the physical act of disturbing the image becomes as important as the subject represented.

Artistic context

The painting may be read in dialogue with the work of Nicola Samorì, particularly in its exposure of the ground, violation of the image surface and treatment of painting as a structure open to physical intervention. It also evokes an attitude associated with Anselm Kiefer’s practice: the weight of material, the autonomy of the painted object and the tension between image and surface.

In Baszynski’s work, the decorative motif of palm trees is radically transformed. Instead of an exotic landscape, the viewer encounters a melancholic, visually saturated image in which beauty, destruction and the materiality of canvas remain in constant tension.
