Maria Stangret-Kantor, painting Abstract Composition, 1963. This is a perfect example of gestural painting, in which the entire drama unfolds in the physicality of the paint and the dynamics of the spontaneous creative act. The composition is organised around a broad, diagonal band of red and brown, around which energetic splashes of blue, green, orange and black swirl. The artist deliberately exposes her technique: thick, almost sculptural impasto, violent brushstrokes and abrasions give the surface a physical presence and dramatic tension. This is painting that does not represent, but is – it is a direct record of emotional energy, captured in dense texture and spontaneous, unbridled gesture.

Maria Stangret-Kantor, “Abstract Composition”, 1963 – gestural painting and expressive matter

Maria Stangret-Kantor, “Abstract Composition”, 1963 is an abstract painting and a powerful example of gestural, informel painting in Polish art of the 1960s. The entire drama of the work unfolds in the physicality of paint and in the dynamics of the spontaneous creative act. Rather than depicting anything, the painting becomes a direct record of emotional energy captured in a dense, tactile surface.

Work description – diagonal band and swirling colour

The composition is organised around a broad diagonal band of red and brown that cuts across the canvas. This strong, decisive stroke forms the axis of tension for the rest of the image.

Around it, energetic patches of colourblue, green, orange and black – swirl and collide. Paint is applied with sweeping gestures, sometimes smeared, sometimes thrown onto the surface. Against the agitated, light ground, these contrasting accents create an impression of movement, impact and explosive energy.

Texture and gesture – a painting that “is” rather than represents

In “Abstract Composition”, Maria Stangret-Kantor deliberately emphasizes process and material. The surface is built from thick, almost sculptural impastos. Violent brushmarks, scrapes and sudden changes of direction turn the painting into something close to an object, not merely an image.

This is gestural painting in which the act of painting itself is central. The work does not aim to illustrate anything – it simply happens. What we see is the trace of the artist’s actions, a direct registration of impulse, tension and emotion. “Abstract Composition” thus becomes a visual equivalent of the intense, bodily experience of painting.

Maria Stangret-Kantor and the Polish neo-avant-garde

Created in 1963, the work belongs to the context of the Polish neo-avant-garde, which at that time explored informel, matter painting and expressive abstraction. In Stangret-Kantor’s case, the experience of Tadeusz Kantor’s Cricot 2 Theatre is also crucial – theatrical gesture, dramatic movement and the awareness of the body’s presence in space are translated into paint.

Abstract Composition” shows how the artist developed her own distinct visual language, based on the confrontation of colour and texture, the violence of gesture and an open, non-narrative composition. It is an important work both for the history of Polish abstract painting and for understanding Maria Stangret-Kantor’s artistic path.

Viewing experience – energy, tension and physical presence

Confronted with this painting, the viewer does not look for recognisable motifs, but rather experiences the energy condensed in the paint layer. The diagonal red-brown band, contrasted with blue and orange accents and thick texture, creates a strong visual tension. The work appeals directly to the senses – it feels almost tactile, as if the paint were still wet and moving.

For collectors and institutions interested in 1960s Polish abstraction, gestural painting and the work of Maria Stangret-Kantor, “Abstract Composition”, 1963 is a key example of art in which emotion and material are inseparably fused.
