Marek Zyga. The sculpture depicts a seated figure with a naked, cracked head, whose surface resembles raw clay. The body is covered with glaze – black and red – creating a strong visual contrast. The figure, immersed in an introspective pose, exudes a melancholic mood and inner focus. Letters appear on the glazed fragments. The black surface is decorated with relief signs, while the red surface features flat symbols resembling various typefaces. This motif refers to language and cultural code – as if the figure were immersed in a matrix of signs that both define and isolate it. The sculpture is mounted on a tall, austere pedestal made of rust-brown metal, which reinforces the contrast between the physicality of the figure and its abstract, symbolic surroundings. The work speaks of the fragility of man in the face of systems of language and culture that overwhelm him, but at the same time define the framework of his existence.

Marek Zyga, “I Am”, 2025 – contemporary figurative sculpture about identity and language

Marek Zyga, sculpture “I Am”, 2025 is a powerful example of contemporary ceramic sculpture in which the artist explores the tension between human fragility and the vast systems of language and culture. Resting on a tall, raw steel pedestal with a rusty-brown surface, we see a seated figure with a bare, cracked head that resembles unfired clay. The body is covered with contrasting glaze – deep black and vivid red – creating a strong visual and emotional impact.

The figure’s introspective pose radiates melancholy and inner concentration. On the glazed surfaces appear letters and symbols: the black area is decorated with relief-like signs, while the red part bears flat, typographic characters. This recurring motif of letters refers to language as a cultural matrix – a code that both defines the individual and separates them from others.

In “I Am”, Marek Zyga confronts the physical presence of the body, the expressiveness of gesture and the raw materiality of clay with the abstract realm of signs. The tall, industrial pedestal increases the sense of isolation, presenting the figure as a fragile point within an overwhelming system of meanings. The sculpture becomes a metaphor for the condition of the contemporary human being – entangled in language, media and cultural codes that exceed their control but also provide the framework of existence.

“I Am”, 2025, will appeal to collectors looking for thought-provoking contemporary sculpture that combines ceramics, metal and the motif of writing into a coherent reflection on identity and self-awareness.
