Marek Zyga, “It’s Only Magic”, 2025 – contemporary figurative sculpture between installation and social commentary
Marek Zyga, sculpture “It’s Only Magic”, 2025 depicts a seated figure in a meditative pose, constructed from strongly contrasting materials and textures. The head, made of raw, cracked clay, resembles an archaic mask or ritual effigy, while the body covered with glossy glaze radiates both weight and strict rhythm. This play of opposites – organic / artificial, primal / contemporary – becomes a starting point for reflecting on the human condition in a world dominated by images and media.
On the black glazed surface we see a repeated motif of eyes, creating an atmosphere of unease, surveillance and constant observation. The viewer has the feeling of being watched, as if the figure were a medium of collective gaze. At the centre of the composition stands a round disc with a photographic image of a woman’s face, crossed out by a white X. This gesture can be read as a symbol of silence, censorship and the denial of voice, introducing questions of identity, freedom of speech and social constraints.
The confrontation of silence and stare, archaic form and contemporary iconography places “It’s Only Magic” on the border between sculpture, installation and social commentary. The figure emanates both calm and tension, becoming a carrier of conflicting yet complementary meanings – from meditative stillness to protest against systems of control. Marek Zyga’s work will appeal to collectors interested in figurative sculpture with a strong critical message.
