Jerzy Baranowski, “Untitled”, 2021 – painting-object, geometric spatial abstraction
Jerzy Baranowski, work “Untitled”, 2021 moves beyond the traditional notion of painting, functioning as a hybrid between canvas and sculpture. The picture plane becomes a cut-out form; the painted structure acquires a physical outline, as if the material of the painting had stepped out of the surface to claim its own autonomous contour. The artist pushes past the frame – the work behaves like an independent spatial object engaging directly with the architecture around it.
The geometry of the piece evokes a labyrinth or algorithmic diagram, even a fragment of complex code. Precise, angular lines create a system of interlocking modules in which negative space is as important as solid form. Repetition and rhythm generate both a sense of order and a subtle tension – like a visualisation of the nervous system of contemporary life or the architecture of thought.
Baranowski abandons pictorial illusion in favour of pure presence – shape, rhythm and texture. The dense, diagonal strokes on the dark surface lend the object a tactile depth, causing it to shift appearance with changing light and viewpoint. This minimal yet striking work is perfectly suited to modern interiors, offices, galleries and public spaces, where art is meant to underline the character and tempo of a given place.
