Andrzej Fogtt, “Brda – Sunset”, 2013 – expressive sunset landscape over the Brda river
Andrzej Fogtt, painting “Brda – Sunset”, 2013 forms part of the artist’s celebrated “Brda” series, inspired by the Brda river in Poland. In this work Fogtt focuses on the moment of sunset, when light ignites the river and its banks with intense colour. The upper section of the canvas glows with fiery oranges, yellows and reds, which melt into their reflections on the water’s surface and gradually shift into cool blues, greens and deep ultramarines below. The entire composition becomes a vibrating field of colour and light.
“Brda – Sunset” clearly demonstrates Fogtt’s ability to combine realism with abstraction. On one level the painting can be read as a sunset river landscape; on another, the dense dabs of paint and short, broken brushstrokes create a purely abstract rhythm in which the key element is the energy of nature rather than literal description. The explosion of colour serves as a vehicle for emotion and inner intensity – the blazing upper band contrasts with the cooler, darker lower half, evoking a meeting of the elements of fire and water.
Known for his unconventional and deeply personal approach, Fogtt uses the large panoramic format to convey the inner pulse and vitality of the landscape. Thick layers of paint, shimmering highlights and almost pointillist dots make the surface appear to flicker and move as the viewer shifts position. “Brda – Sunset”, 2013, is an outstanding choice for collectors of contemporary landscape painting who appreciate bold colour, abstract expression and emotional depth.
