Andrzej Fogtt, “Brda”, 2020 – expressive abstraction inspired by the Brda river
Andrzej Fogtt, painting “Brda”, 2020 is part of the artist’s series in which the Brda river landscape is translated into a highly abstract language of colour and texture. In this work the composition takes the form of a dense horizontal–vertical grid, evoking reeds on the riverbank, reflections on the water’s surface and the structure of a woven fabric all at once. Layered strokes applied with a palette knife create a strong sense of motion, as if the canvas were pulsating with the inner energy of the landscape.
The painting is dominated by vivid oranges, yellows, greens and pinks, enriched with touches of black and brown. For Fogtt, colour is the primary carrier of emotion and energy; the intense palette becomes a metaphor for the vitality of the Brda river and its surroundings. The vibrating combinations of hues generate the illusion of shimmering light on water and constantly changing seasons. Rather than describing nature literally, the work encodes its rhythm in a compact abstract structure.
Texture is equally important. Fogtt applies thick layers of oil paint with a palette knife, building a three-dimensional, almost sculptural surface. “Brda”, 2020, is an ideal choice for collectors interested in large-scale contemporary painting where abstraction, expression and inspiration from nature merge into a coherent, energetic whole.
