Allen Mack, Kuker, 2024. Inspired by Balkan rituals and personal memories, Allen Mack creates a hybrid guardian figure — Kuker — suspended between the sacred and the profane, the past and digital decay. Although the artist draws on folk motifs, his image is not an ethnographic reconstruction, but a processed trace of memory. The humanoid figure, reminiscent of Max Ernst’s surreal hybrids or Yves Tanguy’s organic forms, traverses a landscape resembling a devastated space of consciousness. However, there is more to this phantasmagorical figure: it is a special kind of self-portrait in which Mack shows himself trapped in Kuker’s body. The fanciful forms seem to consume him, becoming an ironic commentary on the artistic vocation and the need to confront one’s own, often overwhelming vision.

Allen Mack, “Kuker”, 2024 – hybrid guardian figure, ritual-inspired contemporary painting

Allen Mack, painting “Kuker”, 2024 is a powerful example of contemporary figurative–abstract painting in which the artist draws on Balkan ritual traditions to reflect on memory, identity and the role of the artist. Inspired by the ceremonial figure of the Kuker, Mack creates a hybrid guardian suspended between the sacred and the profane, between the past and the digital fragmentation of the present.

At the centre of the composition we see a phantasmagorical humanoid figure built from organic blobs, mechanical fragments and erupting colour. Disjointed limbs, a mask-like face, fluid volumes and explosive painterly gestures recall the surreal hybrids of Max Ernst and the organic forms of Yves Tanguy. The character moves through a landscape that resembles a devastated inner territory – a mental space somewhere between dream, memory and nightmare.

Although Mack borrows from folk imagery, “Kuker” is not an ethnographic reconstruction. It is a processed trace of memory, in which personal experiences are merged with the archetype of a guardian from another realm. Hidden within this complex figure is a subtle self-portrait: the artist shows himself as trapped inside the body of the Kuker, engulfed by his own visions. The fantastical forms both support and crush the character, becoming an ironic commentary on the burden of artistic vocation, the pressure of imagination and the struggle with one’s inner world.

“Kuker” occupies a special place in Allen Mack’s practice, combining ritual, mask and transformation with the visual language of contemporary abstraction and post-digital aesthetics. The work will appeal to collectors looking for narrative-driven, symbolically charged paintings that connect folklore, surrealism and contemporary psychological themes.
