Agnieszka Żak, “The High Priestess” from the “Major Arcana” series, 2025 – a painterly vision of mystery and intuition
Agnieszka Żak, painting “The High Priestess”, oil on canvas, round format 60 cm in diameter (2025), offers a contemporary interpretation of one of the most enigmatic tarot cards – the High Priestess (Papess). In tarot symbolism, the High Priestess card is associated with love, empathy and understanding for another person, but above all with heightened sensitivity and intuition, with following the voice of the heart. In its reversed position it can signify indifference, arrogance, a sense of superiority and a hidden, ambiguous side of the personality – secrecy, betrayal, an affair that will never be fully revealed.
In “The High Priestess” from the “Major Arcana” series, Agnieszka Żak translates these meanings into a vivid play of colour and fabric. The swirling orange-red drapery evokes a sensually folded gown, where light and shadow create the illusion of constant movement and energy. Contrasting turquoise forms – reminiscent of jewellery, floral ornaments and radiant emblems – introduce a sacred, mystical accent, underlining the spiritual dimension of the Papess. As in the painting “Strength”, the artist refers to motifs of haute couture textiles, building a visual metaphor of feminine power, secrecy and inner autonomy.
“The High Priestess” is a highly symbolic work, portraying a woman guided by intuition, keeping her distance and never fully unveiling her intentions. The circular format reinforces the idea of a closed, concentrated field of energy in which sensuality meets spirituality. This painting will appeal to collectors interested in Polish contemporary painting, tarot-inspired art and archetypes of femininity.
