Agnieszka Żak, “The Emperor” from the “Major Arcana” series, 2025 – a contemporary image of power
Agnieszka Żak, painting “The Emperor”, oil on canvas, circular format 60 cm in diameter (2025), is the artist’s personal interpretation of one of the strongest power-related tarot cards. In tarot symbolism, the Emperor card refers to institutions of authority – political power as well as psychological influence over others – and to the sphere of work, especially management and leadership positions. In its upright position it signifies just rule, responsibility, good reputation and professional success; reversed, it is associated with incompetence, loss of control over subordinates or, conversely, oppressive authoritarianism.
In “The Emperor” from the “Major Arcana” series, Agnieszka Żak deconstructs the traditional patriarchal image of power by using the motif of a lavishly decorated fabric. The swirling orange-red drapery resembles a ceremonial cloak filled with symbols of strength, hierarchy and luxury. Hidden among them is a small fragment of fabric taken from the painting “The Empress”, reminding us that behind many male successes there is often an unseen woman – supporting, motivating and maintaining the home background. The dense, circular composition becomes a metaphor for the closed world of power, built on tangled roles, dependencies and interests.
The painting also refers to Żak’s work “Strength”, dedicated to female power and achievement in a patriarchal world where success was long reserved almost exclusively for men. “The Emperor” thus becomes a contemporary icon of authority, in which tarot symbolism meets the history of fashion, the legacy of figures such as Helena Rubinstein and a critical reflection on the position of women in society. It will appeal to collectors interested in tarot-inspired art, Polish contemporary painting and works that combine decorative richness with a strong conceptual message.
