An image from the Major Arcana series. In the Tarot, the Pope card is a symbol of piety and conservatism. It signifies a person of great authority, not necessarily a clergyman, but also, for example, a teacher. The card in the Tarot marked with the number V, known as the Pope or the Hierophant, is depicted as a man dressed in a robe resembling a habit. It is associated with the need for expert advice or help with spiritual issues. It also relates generally to an interest in spiritual matters and the need for forgiveness. In a positive sense, the Pope symbolises wisdom, teaching, a spiritual master, and a commitment to tradition. In a negative aspect, it signifies disappointment in someone who was an authority figure, resentment, anger, rebellion against established norms and moral principles; it may also represent a toxic father, grandfather, a priest without a calling, fanaticism, a spiritual crisis, imposing one’s views on others, or intolerance.

The work was inspired by the imagery found on classic tarot cards, their descriptions, and also by painted portraits of famous popes, such as Pope Innocent X by Diego Velázquez, or Pope Paul III with his nephews by Titian, as well as portraits of the Pope by Francis Bacon, which have gone down in history as psychological portraits of the men who ruled the Papal States. During the Renaissance and the Counter-Reformation, popes hailed from powerful European families—the Borgias, the Medici, the Della Rovere, the Barberini and the Farnese—who, through a nepotistic network of connections, pursued an aggressive European policy, often through the bloody Inquisition. In my painting, I limit myself to depicting only a fragment of a purple robe, enclosed within an oval composition..

“The Pope” Painting – Oil on Canvas, Diameter 65 cm, 2026

“The Pope” is an oil painting on canvas from the Major Arcana series, inspired by the symbolism of Tarot cards. The work is an original interpretation of card V – The Pope, also known as The Hierophant. In Tarot tradition, this card refers to spirituality, authority, wisdom, teaching and devotion to tradition and established values.

On the symbolic level, the painting evokes the figure of a spiritual guide, master, teacher or a person of great authority. The Pope represents the search for knowledge, expert guidance, help in spiritual matters, and the need for forgiveness and inner order. In its positive aspect, the card signifies wisdom, experience, responsibility and respect for tradition. In a more ambivalent interpretation, it may also point to a crisis of authority, rebellion against imposed norms, fanaticism, intolerance, or disappointment in someone once regarded as a moral guide.

The artist deliberately avoids a literal portrait of the figure. Instead of depicting a person directly, she presents only a fragment of a purple robe, enclosed within a circular composition. This reduction gives the painting a universal and symbolic character. Intense red tones, deep purples and fluid, almost organic folds and reflections create a visual tension between the sacred, power, emotion and psychological depth.

The work was inspired both by classical Tarot imagery of The Pope card and by painted portraits of famous historical popes. Conceptually, it recalls the legacy of masters such as Diego Velázquez, Titian and Francis Bacon, whose papal portraits became not only likenesses, but also profound studies of power, psychology and the tensions of their times. In this painting, that historical symbolism is distilled into a sign: the robe itself becomes a bearer of dignity, office, ideology and spiritual burden.

“The Pope” is an excellent choice for collectors and art lovers seeking contemporary works that are visually striking and rich in symbolic meaning. The painting will work beautifully in modern, minimalist or curated interiors as a bold focal point and an intellectually engaging piece. It combines expressive painterly language with reflection on authority, spirituality and cultural history.
