Zofia Artymowska – painter, printmaker and a key figure of Polish geometric abstraction
Zofia Artymowska (1923–2000) was a Polish painter, printmaker and art educator, and one of the important figures of post-war Polish art and geometric abstraction. Her oeuvre spans easel and mural painting, mosaic, collage and printmaking, and has secured a lasting place in the history of Polish contemporary art, especially through her famous series “Poliformy” (“Poliforms”).
Education and early career
Artymowska studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, graduating in 1950 in the studio of Prof. Eugeniusz Eibisch. After moving to Warsaw, she participated in the creation of polychromes on the façades of the Old and New Town tenement houses (1953–1956), for which she received a State Award (2nd degree) and the Gold Cross of Merit.
She later spent several years in the Middle East, teaching mural painting and drawing at universities in Baghdad and Tehran. She was also active in promoting contemporary art, co-founding the “Promotion of Polish Visual Art” foundation and opening one of the first contemporary art galleries in Łowicz.
Artistic language – from mural painting to geometric abstraction
Zofia Artymowska’s work developed at the intersection of painting, architecture and graphic arts. Her early practice was linked to mural and architectural decoration, where she combined drawing, colour and rhythm with existing architectural structures.
Over time her focus shifted decisively towards geometric abstraction. She constructed compositions based on modular systems, repetition and strict compositional order. Artymowska explored rhythm, sequence and the relationship between figure and ground, creating works that are at once intellectually grounded and visually compelling.
The “Poliformy” series – an icon of Polish geometric abstraction
The most celebrated part of her oeuvre is the series “Poliformy”. These are hypnotic abstract compositions built from vertical, cylindrical modules and precisely articulated, striped or ribbed backgrounds. The artist investigated spatial relations and tension between form and emptiness, using:
- rhythmic repetition of elements,
- finely calibrated, vibrating backgrounds that create an optical sense of movement,
- intense greens, blues, deep navy and saturated accents of yellow and red contrasted with areas of white and grey,
- a strong illusion of volume and light, giving the forms an almost sculptural presence.
Through these strategies, “Poliformy” relate to op art and geometric abstraction, while retaining a distinctly individual character – the aim is not only optical effect, but also a meditative reflection on infinity, rhythm and order.

Works by Zofia Artymowska have been shown in numerous exhibitions in Warsaw, Łódź, Kraków and other Polish cities, as well as abroad, including New York, Paris and Baghdad.
