Sylwester Ambroziak – Sculptor and Multimedia Artist
Sylwester Ambroziak is one of the most recognizable Polish contemporary sculptors. He was born in 1964 in Łowicz, Poland. He studied at the Faculty of Sculpture of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where he graduated in 1989 from the studio of Professor Grzegorz Kowalski. The artist works in sculpture, drawing, installation and experimental animated film.
Expressive Sculpture and Monumental Form
Sylwester Ambroziak’s work is based on strong expressive means, deformation, simplified shapes and exaggerated proportions. His sculptures are often large-scale wooden figures, although the artist also uses silicone, acrylic compounds and epoxy resin. His works are known for humanoid figures with anonymous faces, described by the artist, among others, as “Minotaurs” and “Dolls”.
Inspirations: Archaic Art, Folk Art and Contemporary Culture
The expression of Ambroziak’s sculptures has been influenced by primitive, archaic and folk art, including the formal features of African figures and masks. The artist often refers to ancient, biblical and Christian themes, interpreting them in a way that is far from the classical canon. Important contexts for his art include the political situation in Poland in the 1980s, the dominant role of Catholicism in Polish society, as well as contemporary mass culture, comics, animation, science fiction and aggressive media messages.
New Expression and the Language of Contemporary Sculpture
Ambroziak made his debut while still a student, presenting his actions and sculptures at Galeria Dziekanka and at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. His early works were associated with the New Expression movement. In his later practice, he remained faithful to an intense expressionist language of form, in which grotesque, ugliness and deformation become tools for describing the human condition.
Exhibitions, Awards and Collections
Sylwester Ambroziak has presented his works in more than 130 solo exhibitions and has participated in over 150 group exhibitions in Poland and abroad. He has received scholarships from institutions including the Notoro Foundation, the Centre of Polish Sculpture in Orońsko, the Culture Foundation and the Kulczyk Foundation. He was nominated three times for the “Polityka Passport” award in 1994, 1999 and 2008. In 2023, he received the Silver Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis. His works are held in museum collections and private collections in Poland and internationally.
