Marek Zyga – Polish sculptor, contemporary ceramic sculpture and the “Fundamenty” series

Marek Zyga (b. 1968) is a Polish sculptor who has been working with ceramic sculpture since 2003. His works refer to classical sculptural forms while introducing symbolic, surreal and revealing narratives. In his emblematic series “Fundamenty” (“Foundations”), presented at Station of Art Gallery, human figures carry constructions built from letters, treated as a symbol of human communication and the struggles of contemporary society.

Biography and debut

Marek Zyga lives and works in Bolesławiec, a town renowned for its ceramic tradition. In this context he has developed his own approach to ceramic sculpture, moving far beyond functional ceramics into the field of contemporary figurative sculpture and symbolic objects.

He made his debut in 2007 at the Museum of Ceramics in Bolesławiec. Since then, his ceramic sculptures have been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Poland and abroad, steadily building his position on the international contemporary art scene.

Body, gesture and letters – visual narratives of communication

Marek Zyga’s sculpture focuses on the human body and gesture, understood as carriers of meaning and emotion. The artist draws inspiration from human behaviour, reactions and interpersonal relations. In his own words, he searches for sentences in gestures, for words in sentences, and for letters at the core of words – and it is precisely these letters that he literally weaves into his sculptures.

In the series “Fundamenty”, human figures carry letter-based structures on their backs and shoulders. These constructions can be read as metaphors of language, communication, information overload and the burdens of contemporary life. The classical figure becomes a stage on which the tension between physical presence and symbolic weight plays out.

Technique and material – ceramic sculpture as a contemporary medium

Since 2003, ceramics has been Zyga’s primary medium. He works with clay, glaze and firing, combining traditional craftsmanship with a distinctly contemporary sculptural language. The surfaces of his works often bear intentional traces of cracks, abrasions and patina, underlining the fragility of the human condition and the passage of time.

Zyga’s approach to form is both classically grounded and experimental. His sculptures balance between recognisable figuration and poetic abstraction, turning everyday human experience into visual stories about communication, vulnerability and resilience.
