Konrad Jarodzki – painter, architect and key figure of the Wrocław art scene
Konrad Jarodzki (1927–2021) was a Polish painter, architect and educator, and one of the key figures of the Wrocław art scene in the second half of the 20th century. Throughout his professional life he combined painting with architectural practice and academic work, exerting a lasting influence on the development of contemporary art and modernist architecture in Wrocław. Paintings by Konrad Jarodzki and his architectural projects are an important reference point for those interested in Polish abstraction and the legacy of post-war modernism.
Background – between painting and architecture
Jarodzki graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at the Wrocław University of Technology and from the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Wrocław, where he obtained his painting diploma in the studio of Prof. Eugeniusz Geppert. From the outset he combined architect’s thinking about space with a painter’s sensitivity to light, rhythm and structure.
He was for many years associated with the Wrocław art academy, where he served, among other roles, as rector, playing a key part in its transformation into the Academy of Fine Arts. As a teacher he helped shape the identity of the Wrocław art scene, supporting experimental approaches and encouraging artistic independence.
Painting – space, illusion and optical tension
Konrad Jarodzki’s painting focuses on the phenomenon of seeing and spatial illusion. His works, often kept in a cool, subdued colour range, are built from rhythmic systems of bands, arcs and twisted modules that draw the viewer’s gaze towards an imagined interior of the painting. A particularly characteristic group of works is the “Penetrations” series, in which he explored the boundary between flatness and the illusion of depth.
In these compositions the surface of the canvas seems to lose its flatness: light and shade, tonal transitions and fluid form create a strong sense of three-dimensionality. Jarodzki renounced figuration and anecdotal narrative in favour of a pure, optical experience of space, placing his work in dialogue with op art while maintaining a distinctly personal language.
Architecture and modernist Wrocław
Alongside painting, Konrad Jarodzki worked as an architect, designing respected examples of modernist residential buildings in Wrocław and interiors of industrial facilities. His architectural projects are marked by the same concern for geometry, proportion and clear spatial structure that we find in his paintings.
Through this dual activity he helped shape not only the visual culture of contemporary art, but also the urban fabric of post-war Wrocław, becoming an important figure in the city’s cultural history.
Legacy and significance
Konrad Jarodzki’s oeuvre encompasses both a substantial body of abstract painting and a significant contribution to architecture and art education in Wrocław. His works occupy an important place in the narrative of Polish geometric and optical abstraction, and are increasingly appreciated by collectors looking for analytical, intellectually charged painting.
As a mentor he supported artists associated with the independent Wrocław scene, including members of the Luxus group. His combination of rigorous craft and openness to experiment makes Konrad Jarodzki a crucial reference point in the history of contemporary art in Wrocław.
