Jerzy Fober – Polish sculptor, professor and continuator of the Zakopane school tradition

Jerzy Fober (b. 1959, Warsaw) is a Polish sculptor and professor, associated with the tradition of the Zakopane art school and with contemporary figurative sculpture. Between 1974 and 1979 he studied at the Antoni Kenar State Secondary School of Fine Arts in Zakopane, and from 1979 to 1984 he studied sculpture at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in the studio of Prof. Stanisław Kulon. In 1984 he received his diploma with distinction for the work “Entombment” (Złożenie do grobu). Since then he has become one of the notable figures of contemporary Polish figurative sculpture.

Education and early artistic activity

Fober’s artistic formation combines the strong craft tradition of Zakopane with the academic discipline of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. The influence of Prof. Stanisław Kulon and the focus on sculptural form, body and matter can be traced throughout his oeuvre.

In 1982, still as a student, he co-founded the artistic group “…kim jesteś” (“…who are you”) with Andrzej Szarek and Czesław Podleśny, exhibiting with the group until 1990. This experience contributed to shaping his artistic stance, which combines respect for tradition with an interest in contemporary issues and expressive form.

Sculpture – the human figure, body and spirituality

Jerzy Fober’s work focuses primarily on the human figure. His sculptures often present the body as vulnerable, wounded, tense, yet at the same time carrying a strong spiritual and symbolic dimension. Many works draw on the iconography of Christian art – themes of passion, sacrifice or contemplation – reinterpreted in a contemporary, emotionally charged language.

Material plays a crucial role in his practice. Fober frequently works with wood, allowing the texture, grain and natural imperfections of the material to become part of the artistic message. Tool marks, cuts and rough surfaces are deliberately exposed, emphasising the physicality and drama of the sculptural form.

Teaching and academic career

Since 1986 Jerzy Fober has been active as a teacher. In 2000 he obtained the title of Professor of Fine Arts. He currently runs the Sculpture Studio at the Institute of Fine Arts in Cieszyn, at the Faculty of Arts and Educational Science of the University of Silesia in Katowice.

From 1996 to 2011 he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice, and between 2011 and 2015 he lectured at the Academy of Arts in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia. As a professor he emphasises the importance of solid craftsmanship, conscious work with material and a responsible approach to the human figure.

Jerzy Fober – sculptures for contemporary art collections

Sculptures by Jerzy Fober are particularly attractive to collectors interested in contemporary figurative sculpture with a strong spiritual and existential dimension. His works offer:

  • a high level of craftsmanship rooted in the Zakopane and Warsaw sculptural traditions,
  • expressive, emotionally charged figuration,
  • a recognisable style that combines raw materiality with inner intensity.

Fober’s art fits naturally into collections focused on Polish contemporary sculpture, figurative art and the dialogue between tradition and contemporary spirituality.
