Jan Pamuła – painter, printmaker, pioneer of computer art and geometric abstraction

Jan Pamuła (1944–2022) was a Polish painter, printmaker and educator, one of the leading representatives of geometric abstraction in Poland and a true pioneer of computer-based art. His oeuvre combines traditional painting with system-based thinking and new technologies, earning him a lasting place in the history of Polish contemporary art. Paintings by Jan Pamuła are highly valued by collectors and institutions interested in the development of abstract and digital art.

Biography – from the Kraków Academy to the position of rector

Pamuła studied at the Painting Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków, graduating in 1968 in the studio of Prof. Hanna Rudzka-Cybisowa. In 1979 he became a member of the Second Kraków Group, joining the circle of artists associated with avant-garde and modern tendencies.

For many years he taught at his alma mater, ultimately serving as Rector of the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków from 1996 to 2002. As a teacher he played a crucial role in shaping subsequent generations of artists, promoting systemic thinking, experimentation and openness to new media.

Geometric abstraction – visual systems of colour, form and light

Jan Pamuła’s painting belongs to the field of geometric abstraction, based on precise, logically constructed structures. His compositions are made up of modules, grids and rhythmic patterns, treated as visual systems rather than spontaneous gestures. Colour, often intense and saturated, is used to organise spatial relations and generate a sense of depth and vibration.

His works can be read as maps of visual tensions, where every element is necessary and meaningful. For collectors focusing on geometric abstraction, systemic art and analytical approaches to painting, Jan Pamuła’s works represent a key chapter in the story of post-war Polish abstraction.

Pioneer of computer art – from algorithm to canvas

Pamuła was one of the first artists in Poland to use the computer as a tool for analysing and generating visual structures. He developed computer-based compositions in which algorithms and programs produced complex visual systems. These digital structures became the basis for his paintings, translated onto canvas with painterly sensitivity and material richness.

This combination of digital logic and traditional paint is what makes his work so distinctive. Pamuła demonstrated that computer art can enrich rather than replace painting, offering new ways of thinking about form, repetition and variation.

Exhibitions, awards and collections

Jan Pamuła held over 70 solo exhibitions and participated in hundreds of group shows in Poland and abroad. His achievements were recognised with numerous awards, including the prestigious Jan Cybis Award (2000) and the City of Kraków Award for culture and the arts (2014). He also received the Gold Medal “Gloria Artis” for Merit to Culture.

Works by Jan Pamuła are represented in major museum, gallery and private collections, and are frequently included in exhibitions focusing on Polish geometric abstraction, digital art and systemic painting.

Jan Pamuła – works for contemporary art collections
