Aleksandra Jachtoma – Polish painter, a classic of post-war art

Aleksandra Jachtoma (b. 1932) is a Polish painter and one of the key figures of post-war Polish art and modern painting in Poland. Her paintings, recognised for their intense colour and rich texture, have long attracted collectors, lovers of contemporary painting and cultural institutions. Search terms such as “Aleksandra Jachtoma paintings” or “Polish post-war painter” naturally lead to her work.

Biography and education

Jachtoma studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, and later continued her education at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków in the studio of Prof. Czesław Rzepiński. She then moved to the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where in 1958 she received her diploma with distinction under Prof. Kazimierz Tomorowicz.

In 1963 she co-founded the Warsaw art group “Rekonesans”, which brought together artists exploring new forms of expression in contemporary painting. This activity strengthened her position on the Warsaw and nationwide art scene and anchored her among the most important representatives of Polish abstraction and colour-based painting.

Painting style – colour, space and texture

Aleksandra Jachtoma’s painting is distinguished by intense, saturated colour, subtle tonal transitions and layered, tactile surfaces. She often works with large colour fields, using them to build deep, meditative pictorial space. In many works she approaches the aesthetics of colour field painting, reinterpreting it in her own way.

Colour in her canvases is not merely decorative; it acts as the main carrier of emotion and meaning. Luminous, interpenetrating tones create a sense of inner radiance, while delicate value shifts generate spatial depth. The rich texture and visible brushwork emphasise the material presence of the painting, making her canvases function both as spaces of contemplation and as distinct physical objects.

Place within Polish post-war art

Aleksandra Jachtoma is regarded as a classic of post-war Polish art. Her oeuvre, developed consistently since the late 1950s, is an important point of reference for younger generations interested in abstraction, colour and matter painting. Numerous exhibitions in Poland and abroad, as well as the presence of her works in public collections, confirm the status of Jachtoma’s paintings as key works of Polish modern and contemporary art.

Aleksandra Jachtoma – paintings for collectors

Paintings by Aleksandra Jachtoma are sought after by collectors who appreciate post-war classics as well as those drawn to emotionally charged, colour-driven abstraction. Her work offers a unique combination of formal clarity, expressive colour and contemplative atmosphere, making it a strong addition to any collection of Polish post-war art.
