Agnieszka Żak – contemporary painter, the “Great Arcana” series

Agnieszka Żak is a Polish contemporary painter whose works combine a strong sense of colour and pattern with an in-depth interest in archetypes, spirituality and mythology. Her paintings – including the cycle “Great Arcana” – balance sensual surface with symbolic content and are an intriguing proposal for collectors of contemporary Polish painting.

Biography and education

Born in 1982 in Warsaw, Agnieszka Żak studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera in Milan (2004–2005) and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw. In 2007 she obtained her diploma at the Painting Department in the studio of Prof. Jarosław Modzelewski, with an additional project in the Studio of Art in Public Space run by Prof. Mirosław Duchowski, both defended with distinction.

She is the recipient of the “Diploma 2007 – Prof. Józef Szajna Award” granted by Prof. Szajna and Galeria Studio in Warsaw. Żak has held a number of prestigious scholarships, including the Entry Initiative grant, a double scholarship of the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage (2010, 2020) and a grant from the City of Warsaw (2019).

In 2019 she received a Doctor of Fine Arts degree from the Painting Department of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw under the supervision of Prof. Stanisław Baj. She currently runs the Drawing and Painting Studio at the Interior Architecture programme at the University of Technology and Commerce in Warsaw.

Painting style – fabrics, patterns and archetypes

Agnieszka Żak’s paintings often focus on fabrics, scarves and ornamental patterns, treated as carriers of memory and meaning. Layered compositions, built as a kind of painterly collage, combine broad colour fields with carefully rendered details, creating works that are both visually rich and intellectually engaging.

The artist is interested in how everyday materials can become a stage for mythological, ritual and spiritual narratives. Her practice resonates with viewers who seek contemporary art dealing with symbolism, Tarot and the language of archetypes.

“Great Arcana” – contemporary paintings inspired by Tarot

The cycle “Great Arcana” plays a central role in her oeuvre. It consists of paintings depicting patterned scarves and textiles juxtaposed in the manner of a collage. Each work alludes to the major Tarot cards and to universal figures and symbols present in myths and rituals.

Żak refers not only to age-old traditions, but also to the contemporary phenomenon of online Tarot readers and spiritual guides on YouTube, who respond to a growing need for knowledge of the future and personal guidance. Her paintings thus link ancient archetypal imagery with the spiritual practices of the digital age.

“Great Arcana” also enters into dialogue with the history of esoterically inspired modern art – from Hilma af Klint and Wassily Kandinsky to the ideas of Rudolf Steiner and Carl Gustav Jung. For Żak, the archetype understood as a “primordial image” becomes a structure that can be expressed through colour, rhythm and pattern.

Agnieszka Żak – paintings for contemporary art collections

Paintings by Agnieszka Żak will appeal to collectors looking for Polish contemporary art that combines a refined painterly language with spiritual, symbolic and psychological depth. The series “Great Arcana” offers a unique, visually striking interpretation of Tarot imagery within the field of contemporary painting.
